M03 · Grade specification / availability

Choose the wire grade inside the correct product specification.

“Stainless steel wire” covers several different purchasing routes. General-purpose wire, spring wire, cold-heading wire and free-machining wire can use different standards, conditions and acceptance criteria even when the alloy family sounds familiar.

Austenitic

304 / 304L family

A common starting family for general corrosion-resistant wire and forming applications when the service and product standard permit it.

Specify
Product standard + exact grade + diameter / profile + condition.
Verify
Chemistry, mechanical properties and surface requirements from the governing specification and material documents.
Mo-bearing austenitic

316 / 316L family

Often evaluated where corrosion conditions are more demanding, but suitability still depends on the environment, forming route and final component requirements.

Specify
Service medium, temperature, forming process and required standard.
Verify
Exact designation, condition and corrosion assumptions before approval.
Spring route

Spring-wire grades

Spring applications require the spring-wire specification, grade and tensile / temper condition to be selected together. Do not substitute general annealed wire for a spring requirement.

Specify
ASTM A313/A313M or project standard, grade, diameter, tensile / temper and coil requirements.
Verify
Mechanical acceptance and any stress-relief / downstream heat-treatment assumptions.
Application-specific

Heading or free-machining grades

Cold heading / forging and free-machining wire use application-specific material routes. The requested product standard must match the downstream process.

Specify
Heading / forging route or machining route, exact standard and grade.
Verify
Formability / machinability condition, mechanical properties, surface and traceability.

Availability must be confirmed by the exact wire combination.

This page does not claim inventory for every grade, diameter, profile, temper or package. A valid quotation should confirm the exact specification, grade, wire geometry, condition, surface, mechanical requirement, quantity and destination against current supplier capability.

M04 · Technical data tables

Write the wire specification so engineering and procurement review the same requirement.

Exact chemistry, tensile limits, hardness, elongation and dimensional tolerances depend on the selected product specification, grade, wire size and condition. Use the governing standard or approved drawing for numeric acceptance values rather than copying generic supplier numbers.

Technical field What the RFQ should state Acceptance / review point
Product standard ASTM / EN / JIS / customer specification and required edition. Confirm the standard actually covers the requested wire application and shape.
Grade / UNS Exact designation belonging to the chosen product standard. Verify chemistry against the applicable standard and MTC; do not assume cross-standard equivalence.
Diameter / profile Nominal diameter for round wire or full section dimensions for square, hex or special-shape wire. State dimensional tolerance or drawing reference and measurement method when critical.
Condition / temper Annealed, bright annealed, cold worked, spring / tensile-controlled or other specified condition. Mechanical properties can change materially with condition and wire size.
Mechanical requirement Required tensile strength, yield / elongation, hardness or spring-wire class only where the governing specification calls for it. Use standard tables / approved drawing values for the exact size and condition.
Surface Clean / bright, pickled, coated / lubricated or customer-controlled surface where required. Agree visual, cleanliness, lubricant / coating and downstream process requirements before purchase.
Coil / package Coil, spool, reel or other package; state ID / OD, weight, winding or handling limits when process-critical. Package capability is supplier-specific and must be confirmed in the quotation.
Straightness / cast / helix State only when downstream feeding, spring making or precision forming makes these attributes critical. Use the applicable product / customer specification and agreed measurement method.
Inspection & documents Chemistry, mechanical tests, dimensional checks, surface inspection, traceability, MTC and any third-party requirements. Set the acceptance plan before order placement; do not invent tests after shipment.
Commercial data Quantity, destination, requested date and any split-lot / packaging restrictions. Allows current supply and logistics feasibility to be reviewed.
Wire vs wire rod vs welding wire: wire is the finished or semi-finished drawn wire product specified by its own standard and condition. Wire rod is a larger semifinished feedstock primarily used to manufacture wire. Dedicated welding wire is a separate consumable product route and should not be assumed from a generic stainless wire specification.

M05 · Sizes, forms and finishes matrix

Quote wire with geometry, condition and package together.

A diameter alone is not enough for most wire enquiries. The same nominal size can behave very differently depending on grade, cold work, tensile / temper, surface treatment, profile and coil or spool configuration.

Wire form / condition How to specify Typical sourcing question
Round general wire Diameter + tolerance + standard + grade + condition. Is the exact size / condition available in the required coil or spool format?
Square / hex / special shape Full profile dimensions + corner / section drawing where needed + tolerance. Does the selected standard and supplier route cover the requested profile?
Annealed / soft wire Grade + size + annealed condition + surface + package. Is the forming route compatible with the required softness and cleanliness?
Cold-worked wire Grade + size + required mechanical range / temper + surface. Can the requested strength / ductility combination be held for the exact diameter?
Spring wire Spring-wire standard + grade + diameter + tensile / temper + coil characteristics. Which spring-wire class / mechanical range applies to the requested size?
Heading / forming wire Heading standard + grade + size + condition + surface / coating where required. Does the material condition meet the downstream cold-heading or forging process?
Bright / clean surface Define the actual cleanliness, appearance or downstream requirement instead of using “bright” alone. What objective acceptance method or reference sample will be used?
Coil / spool / reel package Package type + any ID / OD / weight / winding / pay-off restrictions. Can the supplier support the package needed by the customer’s feeding equipment?

M06 · Selection / comparison matrix

Match the wire standard to the downstream process.

The safest selection path is application → product standard → grade → geometry → condition → acceptance. Standards that all contain “stainless wire” are not interchangeable purchasing documents.

Specification route Primary use Key RFQ controls Selection caution
ASTM A580/A580M General stainless steel wire in coils for corrosion-resistant and high-temperature service. Grade, round / shape geometry, size, condition, mechanical requirements and surface. Excludes free-machining types; verify the requested wire form is within scope.
ASTM A313/A313M Stainless steel round spring wire. Grade, diameter, tensile / temper requirement, coil characteristics and downstream heat treatment if relevant. Use for spring-wire requirements; do not replace it with generic annealed wire.
ASTM A493 Stainless wire and wire rod for cold heading / cold forging. Grade, size, finished condition, forming requirement, surface and mechanical acceptance. Heading performance depends on the material route and condition, not grade name alone.
ASTM A581/A581M Free-machining stainless steel wire and wire rods. Free-machining grade, size / shape, condition and machinability-related requirements. Use only when the application intentionally requires a free-machining stainless route.
Customer / industry specification Precision, specialty, regulated or component-specific wire. Drawing, material specification, revision, inspection plan and approved-source requirements. Customer-specific requirements take priority where contractually applicable.
Grade equivalence: a similar chemistry label across ASTM, EN, JIS or GB systems does not create automatic contractual equivalence. Map the exact designation, product form, condition, mechanical requirements and acceptance clauses before substitution.

M08 · Applications and limitations

Connect the wire requirement to the process that will consume it.

A useful RFQ explains what the wire will become. The downstream route often determines whether diameter control, surface, tensile / temper, coil behavior, heading performance or corrosion resistance is the dominant requirement.

01

General forming & fabrication

Loops, clips, formed parts, ties and other corrosion-resistant components where the chosen grade, condition and surface support the forming route.

02

Springs & resilient components

Use a spring-wire specification with controlled mechanical requirements rather than generic general-purpose wire.

03

Cold heading & fastener forming

State heading / forging requirements, size, condition and surface so the supplier can review the correct A493 or project route.

04

Weaving, stranding & mesh conversion

Surface, ductility, size consistency, coil behavior and application-specific standards may be more important than a generic grade label.

05

Machined wire components

Where machinability is the main requirement, a free-machining wire specification and grade may be more appropriate than A580 general wire.

06

Corrosion-sensitive service

Grade selection should reflect the real environment, temperature, cleaning regime and component design; stainless is not universally corrosion-proof.

Important limitations before supplier approval

  • Do not use this page as proof of stock, mill capability, approved-source status or a guaranteed diameter / tensile range.
  • Do not treat stainless steel wire rod as identical to finished wire; wire rod is primarily a feedstock for wire manufacture.
  • Do not treat generic wire as stainless steel welding wire; welding consumables have their own composition, classification and performance requirements.
  • For medical, aerospace, nuclear, food-contact or other regulated uses, attach the controlling industry / customer specification and approval requirements.
  • Confirm corrosion, fatigue, spring performance and formability in the context of the finished component and process, not from grade name alone.

M10 · Standards and equivalence

Use the standard to define the product route — not to imply supplier capability.

Official standards define scope and technical requirements. A supplier still needs to confirm the exact grade, size, condition, package, testing and documentation that can be offered for the enquiry.

M11 · FAQ / direct answers

Stainless steel wire FAQ

Short answers for common sourcing questions. Final material approval should still follow the applicable product standard, drawing and engineering review.

What is stainless steel wire?

Stainless steel wire is a drawn stainless product supplied in coils, spools, reels or other packages and specified by product standard, grade, diameter or profile, condition and mechanical / surface requirements. ASTM A580/A580M is a common general stainless-wire specification, but spring, heading and free-machining applications use different routes.

What is the difference between stainless steel wire and wire rod?

Wire rod is a semifinished product primarily used as feedstock for making wire. Finished wire has undergone additional drawing / finishing and is purchased to wire-specific dimensional, mechanical, condition and surface requirements. The two product forms should not be quoted as interchangeable.

Which ASTM standard should I specify for stainless wire?

Use the standard that matches the downstream application. ASTM A580/A580M covers general stainless wire, A313/A313M covers spring wire, A493 covers cold-heading / cold-forging wire and wire rod, and A581/A581M covers free-machining wire and wire rod. Project or customer specifications can add further requirements.

Is annealed wire the same as spring wire?

No. Annealed wire is supplied in a softer condition for applications where ductility and forming are important. Spring wire is purchased to a spring-wire specification and controlled mechanical / tensile requirements. The grade, size and temper must be selected together.

What information should I send to a stainless steel wire supplier?

Send the product standard and edition, grade / UNS, diameter or profile and tolerance, required condition / temper, mechanical requirement where applicable, surface, coil / spool / reel restrictions, inspection / documents, quantity, destination and requested delivery date. Attach a drawing or customer specification when it controls the purchase.
