Stainless Steel Tolerance Chart

There is no universal stainless steel tolerance chart. Tolerances change with product form, manufacturing route, dimensions, edge condition, standard, edition and any special agreement.

Flat productsASTM A480/A480M
Bars and shapesASTM A484/A484M
Pipe general rulesASTM A999/A999M

Decision summary

Choose the product standard before the tolerance value

A drawing tolerance and a mill-product tolerance solve different problems. The purchase order must identify both when downstream fabrication needs tighter control.

Plate, sheet and strip

Use the governing flat-product specification with its general requirements and dimensional tables.

Bars and shapes

Hot-finished and cold-finished products have different size, straightness and shape controls.

Pipe and tube

OD, wall, length and ovality depend on product specification and general requirements.

Metric versus inch

Do not mix unit systems or assume a converted value is the stated standard tolerance.

Mill versus cut part

Cut-to-size, laser, machining and formed-part tolerances need separate process capability.

Inspection method

Define measurement temperature, instrument, location, sampling and acceptance rule.

Working method

Write a tolerance requirement suppliers can quote

Start at the mill product, then add only the special controls needed by the finished part.

Name product and route

State plate, sheet, strip, bar, pipe or tube and hot-, cold-, welded- or seamless route.

Freeze standard and edition

Identify product specification, general requirements and unit system.

List controlled characteristics

State nominal dimensions and required thickness, size, length, shape, straightness or flatness limits.

Define inspection

Add measurement method, sampling, report, marking and disposition for nonconformance.

Limits and escalation

Do not tighten tolerances without a manufacturing plan

Tighter costs more

Special tolerances can require selection, leveling, grinding, machining or extra inspection.

Flatness depends on setup

Support, measurement span, residual stress and cutting can change the observed result.

Wall and OD interact

Tube and pipe acceptance may limit OD and wall separately; calculated ID is not necessarily controlled.

Fabrication can reset geometry

Cutting, welding, forming and heat treatment can move a mill product outside its incoming shape.

Interactive planning aid

Find the tolerance reference starting point

Select the delivered product form to see which standard family and dimensions should be named in the inquiry.

Frequently asked questions

Stainless steel tolerance FAQ

It depends on standard, nominal thickness, width, product type, route and unit system. Check the applicable A480/A480M or other contract standard table.
Often the product controls outside diameter and wall thickness. Calculated ID can vary from their combined tolerances unless the order adds an ID requirement.
No. They are separate systems with different scopes, tables and rules. State the required system explicitly.
No. Cutting and fabrication introduce additional variation; the finished-part drawing and process capability must control the result.

Tolerance control context

Use a tolerance chart with the product form and governing standard.

A dimensional tolerance depends on the applicable product standard, size range, delivery condition, measurement method and the acceptance clause in the purchase requirement.
