M03 · Grade specification / availability

Specify the grade before asking for size availability.

A seamless pipe RFQ should identify the material family and governing standard first. Actual stock, manufacturing range and delivery condition remain supplier-specific facts that require current first-party confirmation.

Austenitic

TP304 / TP304L

Common general-purpose austenitic stainless pipe route for many corrosion-resistant piping requirements.

Typical route
ASTM A312/A312M when its scope fits the service and project code.
RFQ check
State exact grade, design conditions, size, wall and required documentation.
Austenitic

TP316 / TP316L

Molybdenum-bearing austenitic family often considered where corrosion conditions are more demanding.

Typical route
ASTM A312/A312M when applicable.
RFQ check
Do not select grade from a generic corrosion claim; provide process media and design conditions for engineering review.
Service-specific

TP321 / TP347 family

Stabilized austenitic grades may be specified for service conditions where the project design calls for them.

Typical route
Use the applicable grade and product standard required by the design specification.
RFQ check
Confirm temperature, code requirements, heat treatment and inspection provisions.
Duplex

Duplex / super duplex

Ferritic/austenitic stainless pipe is covered by a different product-standard route from conventional austenitic pipe.

Typical route
ASTM A790/A790M when its scope and grade match the project.
RFQ check
State exact UNS / grade, heat-treatment, testing and project-specific acceptance requirements.

Availability is evidence, not a template claim.

This page intentionally does not publish unsupported size or stock ranges. Before indexing, replace the first-party evidence placeholders below with a current, attributable supplier / manufacturer record that proves the actual standard, grades, NPS / DN, wall or schedule, lengths, end preparations and documentation that can be offered.

M04 · Technical data tables

Define the pipe with measurable procurement fields.

The table below is a specification checklist, not an inventory table. Numerical availability must come from current supplier evidence or the approved project requirement.

Field What to specify Why it matters RFQ example format
Product construction Seamless stainless steel pipe Separates this request from welded pipe and from tube. Seamless pipe
Governing product standard Applicable ASTM / project specification and edition when required Controls product scope, material, tests and acceptance. ASTM A312/A312M or ASTM A790/A790M, as applicable
Grade Exact grade / UNS designation Prevents vague “304” or “duplex” substitutions. TP316L, exact project designation, etc.
Nominal size NPS / DN Pipe size is normally specified by nominal size rather than tube-style OD alone. NPS __ / DN __
Wall Schedule or specified wall thickness Wall selection affects dimensions and the design calculation. Schedule __S or wall __ mm
Length Random / fixed / cut length as contractually required Changes yield, packaging and commercial review. Length __ mm / project-defined
Ends Plain, beveled, threaded or other project-defined end preparation Must match fabrication and piping-system requirements. PE / BE / project drawing
Heat-treatment condition Condition required by the governing product specification Do not assume a delivery condition from grade name alone. Per governing standard / project requirement
Inspection / test Hydrostatic / NDE / PMI / additional tests only when required Acceptance requirements affect supply route and documentation. List required tests and acceptance level
Documentation MTC / inspection certificate, heat traceability, marking and any third-party requirement Defines what evidence must accompany the material. EN 10204 type if contractually required + project documents
Pipe is not tube. Pipe and tube can use different dimensional conventions, tolerances and product standards. Do not substitute a tube specification merely because an outside diameter appears similar.

M05 · Sizes, forms and finishes matrix

Build the dimensional callout in the right order.

“2-inch stainless seamless pipe” is not enough for a technical quote. Add the dimensional basis, wall or schedule, length, end preparation and acceptance details.

Dimension / form Common specification method Procurement note
Nominal pipe size NPS or DN Use the system required by the project; do not mix units casually.
Outside diameter Derived from the applicable pipe dimensional standard for the stated NPS / DN ASME B36.19M is a common dimensional basis for wrought stainless steel pipe.
Wall thickness Schedule with “S” designation where applicable, or explicit wall Confirm the schedule / wall combination against the governing dimensional and product standards.
Length Random, fixed or cut-to-length requirement Do not publish a standard stock length unless current supplier evidence supports it.
Ends Plain, beveled, threaded or drawing-defined End geometry should match the downstream joining / fabrication process.
Surface As-produced / pickled / cleaned or project-defined condition Use only a condition actually required by the service and supported by the supplier.
Packaging Bundle / capped ends / special protection if needed State destination and handling constraints in the RFQ.

M06 · Selection / comparison

Choose the route by service, standard and grade — not by product name alone.

The comparison below helps structure the question. Final material selection belongs to the project engineer / responsible technical authority because corrosion, pressure, temperature and code conditions can change the correct choice.

Route 01

304L family

Common austenitic baseline where the design and corrosion environment support it.

Start with
Service media + temperature + design code.
Then define
Product standard, grade, NPS / DN, wall and tests.
Route 02

316L family

Often considered where molybdenum-bearing stainless is required by the design.

Start with
Actual corrosion / chloride conditions rather than a generic “marine grade” assumption.
Then define
Exact product standard and grade designation.
Route 03

Stabilized / high-temperature

Project requirements may call for grades such as TP321 / TP347 family or another code-approved material.

Start with
Design temperature, pressure and governing piping / equipment code.
Then define
Grade, heat-treatment and supplementary test requirements.
Route 04

Duplex family

Ferritic/austenitic stainless has a different product-standard and heat-treatment framework.

Start with
Exact grade / UNS and corrosion / mechanical design requirement.
Then define
ASTM A790/A790M route where applicable plus project-specific acceptance.
Seamless versus welded: construction method is one specification variable, not a universal quality ranking. The governing code, product standard, service, dimensions, inspection and approved supply route determine whether seamless or welded pipe is appropriate.

M08 · Applications + limitations

Use the application to define the specification — not to skip it.

Typical requirement contexts

  • Process and chemical piping where the selected stainless grade and product standard fit the media and design conditions.
  • Food, beverage, pharmaceutical or utility systems when the project specification defines the material, surface, cleaning and documentation requirements.
  • High-temperature or general corrosive service within the scope of the selected product standard and governing design code.
  • Duplex stainless piping where stress-corrosion resistance or other design requirements call for the ferritic/austenitic family.
  • Fabricated piping systems that require seamless construction as part of the approved engineering specification.

Limitations to review

  • “Stainless” does not mean immune to corrosion; chloride, acid, crevice, galvanic and temperature conditions must be reviewed.
  • Pressure and temperature suitability cannot be inferred from grade and schedule alone; use the governing design code and engineering calculation.
  • Pipe and tube standards are not interchangeable simply because OD and wall appear similar.
  • Seamless construction does not automatically remove the need for NDE, hydrostatic testing, PMI or project-specific inspection.
  • Duplex and other service-specific grades require control of heat treatment and fabrication conditions; downstream welding procedures also matter.

M11 · FAQ / direct answers

Stainless steel seamless pipe FAQ

What is stainless steel seamless pipe?

It is stainless steel pipe produced without a longitudinal weld seam and supplied to a defined pipe product specification, grade, dimensional basis and acceptance requirements. “Seamless” describes construction; it does not replace the need to state standard, grade, NPS / DN, wall and tests.

Which standard is commonly used for austenitic stainless steel seamless pipe?

ASTM A312/A312M is a common product specification for austenitic stainless steel pipe and includes seamless construction within its scope. The correct standard still depends on the project, grade, service and governing design code.

What is the difference between stainless steel seamless pipe and tube?

Pipe is normally specified using NPS / DN and pipe wall schedules or specified wall, while tube commonly uses actual outside diameter and wall with tube-specific standards and tolerances. Do not substitute between them without checking the governing specification and design requirements.

Is seamless stainless steel pipe always better than welded pipe?

No. Seamless and welded are different manufacturing routes. Suitability depends on the product standard, design code, service, dimensions, inspection and approved project specification rather than a universal quality ranking.

What information should I send to a stainless steel seamless pipe supplier?

Send the governing product standard, exact grade, NPS / DN, schedule or wall, length, end preparation, service / design conditions, required tests and documentation, quantity, destination and target delivery. Mark unknown engineering items for review rather than guessing.
