Choose dimensions, manufacturing route and section shape, then review the relevant grade.
Start with the dimensional convention, then choose a manufacturing route and section shape. These describe different aspects of the order. Confirm the exact grade and applicable product standard before selecting material.
| Order type | Dimensions to provide | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Pipe | NPS/DN and schedule or specified wall; dimensional standard and length. | NPS is a nominal designation. Confirm the actual OD and wall against the selected dimension table. |
| Tube | Round: OD × wall. Square or rectangular: outside width × height × wall. Include length and tolerances. | Confirm the product standard, finish and connection requirements. Tube can be used for fluid service as well as structural applications. |
Seamless and welded describe manufacture. Both terms can apply to pipe or tube. Specify the permitted route, heat treatment and required inspection. ERW is a welded route, not a third category parallel to all welded products. Neither route alone establishes a pressure rating or suitability for a particular service.
For round sections, provide the outside diameter or pipe size convention. For square and rectangular sections, provide both outside dimensions, wall thickness, corner requirements and a drawing where tolerances matter. Shape does not determine whether the product is seamless or welded. Confirm availability of the requested grade, shape and manufacturing combination.
Examples of distinct product specifications include ASTM A312 for austenitic pipe, A269 for general-service austenitic tube, A213 for seamless boiler and heat-exchanger tube, and A249 for welded austenitic boiler and heat-exchanger tube. Their grade coverage and requirements differ. ASME B36.19 addresses stainless pipe dimensions; a dimensional table is not a material certificate or pressure rating.
