Technical guide
A mill test certificate is useful only when it is tied to the purchase order and delivered material. Verify document type, issuer, product standard, heat and lot identity, test results, marking and any required validation.
Decision summary
“MTC required” is ambiguous. The order should state the document standard and type, product specification, tests, inspection party, language and electronic delivery needs.
Declaration of compliance with the order without test results.
Test report with compliance statement and results based on non-specific inspection.
Inspection certificate with specific inspection results, validated by the manufacturer’s authorized representative independent of manufacturing.
Inspection certificate with specific results validated by the manufacturer’s representative and the purchaser’s representative or designated official inspector.
International standard defining inspection-document types for steel products according to the order.
ASTM, EN, ASME-adopted or other product rules determine required chemistry, mechanical tests, heat treatment and supplementary tests.
Reference table
Check every line against the purchase order, governing standard and physical markings. A polished layout or stamp alone does not establish authenticity.
| Certificate field | What to verify | Common problem | Buyer action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Document type | EN 10204 or ISO 10474 type exactly as ordered | “3.1” shown without correct validation | Resolve before release or shipment |
| Manufacturer and works | Legal entity, works, document number and date | Trader certificate presented as mill certificate | Identify issuer and document chain |
| Purchase and product | PO, item, grade, standard, form, size and quantity | Certificate describes a different form or edition | Match line by line |
| Heat / cast / lot | Identifier matches material marking and packing list | Mixed heats or unreadable marking | Segregate and restore traceability |
| Chemical analysis | All controlled elements, units and limits | Missing elements or wrong grade limits | Compare with governing specification |
| Mechanical tests | Required values, units, orientation and test temperature | Generic typical values instead of lot results | Verify sampling and acceptance basis |
| Heat treatment and tests | Condition, solution treatment, NDE, hydro, PMI or corrosion tests as ordered | Required supplementary test omitted | Hold and obtain disposition |
| Validation | Authorized name/signature or secure digital validation | Unverifiable edits or copied marks | Verify through the issuing mill |
Do not publish a real customer certificate without authorization. Redact commercial and personal data while preserving enough structure for an educational example.
Working method
Start with identity, then technical compliance, then traceability and authenticity.
Compare PO, item, document type, standard edition, grade, dimensions, quantity and supplementary requirements.
Compare chemistry and mechanical or corrosion results with every applicable limit and footnote.
Match heat, lot and marking to tags, stencils, packing list and physical segregation.
Confirm manufacturer, authorized validation, revision status and secure source when authenticity matters.
Limits and escalation
The certificate reports supplied material; it does not validate equipment design or grade suitability.
Cutting, forming, welding, heat treatment and surface processing after mill delivery need separate controls.
Positive material identification can support alloy verification but may not prove carbon, heat treatment or all required properties.
A supplier cannot always upgrade a 2.2 document to 3.1 after manufacture without the required specific inspection basis.
Interactive planning aid
Choose the ordered document type and risk level. The result highlights the first review priority.
Frequently asked questions
Method, sources and review
Official BSI listing for metallic product inspection-document types.
Official ISO page for steel and steel-product inspection documents; confirmed current in 2023.
Official ASTM test methods and definitions for chemical analysis of steel products.
Official ASME catalog context for adopted material specifications and code properties.
The purchase order and governing product or construction standard control the document and tests. Verify the current licensed text and issuer before accepting material.
Certificate review context
A mill test certificate supports traceability only when its heat or batch identity, grade, standard, results and declared product relate to the material actually supplied.
Visual process context
Reserve one image for material marking or product identity and another for the certificate, test record or inspection context.
Engineering and sourcing support
Send grade, product standard and edition, form, dimensions, heat treatment, tests, EN 10204 or ISO 10474 type, validation, quantity and destination.
