Procurement Promise
This page is structured for buyers who need a quotation quickly. Send grade, thickness, drawing revision, quantity, critical dimensions, edge condition and inspection needs together so the cutting route, gas selection, tolerance approach and secondary operations can be reviewed before the quote is released.
Decision Summary
Laser cutting is strongest when the part is fundamentally a 2D profile in sheet or plate and the buyer needs repeatable geometry, efficient nesting and a controlled edge condition without tooling for every new shape. For projects involving laser cutting stainless steel, grade, thickness, gas, tolerance and edge acceptance should be reviewed together. Buyers comparing a stainless laser cutting supplier should also verify equipment envelope, inspection method, drawing control, capacity, MOQ and lead time.
Use laser cutting for brackets, panels, covers, shims, plates and other flat stainless parts when the drawing can be produced from sheet or plate. Review another process when the design requires zero thermal influence, deep 3D features, extremely tight machined bores or a heavy plate thickness outside the confirmed cutting envelope.
Good fit for multiple contours, holes, slots, tabs and nested parts where the profile can be cut directly from flat stainless material.
Fiber laser is fast and precise, but it remains a thermal process. Edge oxidation, local heat-affected zones and distortion risk must be considered on sensitive geometry.
Waterjet is useful when thermal influence must be avoided; machining is better for tight bores and 3D features; shearing is economical for simple straight cuts.
Material Matrix
The matrix below is a practical RFQ starting point rather than a live inventory statement. Actual sourcing route, cutting envelope and finish protection are confirmed against the drawing and current material availability.
These grades cover a large share of fabricated stainless panels, brackets, covers and equipment parts.
Choose the starting surface according to cosmetic, corrosion and downstream fabrication requirements.
Cosmetic faces should be identified on the drawing so handling and packing can be planned before cutting.
| Grade / family | Starting form | Typical thickness guide | Common surface | RFQ status | Notes for laser cutting |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 304 / 304L | Cold-rolled sheet | 0.5–3.0 mm | 2B, BA, No.4, protected surface | Regularly sourced | Nitrogen assist is normally preferred where a clean, oxide-free cut edge is required. |
| 304 / 304L | Plate | 3–20 mm | No.1 / pickled or project finish | Thickness review | Edge quality, dross and achievable tolerance become more thickness-sensitive as plate gets heavier. |
| 316 / 316L | Cold-rolled sheet | 0.5–3.0 mm | 2B, BA, No.4, protected surface | Regularly sourced | Suitable where improved corrosion resistance is required; cosmetic faces should be called out on the drawing. |
| 316 / 316L | Plate | 3–20 mm | No.1 / pickled or project finish | Thickness review | Confirm edge acceptance, flatness and any post-cut passivation or finishing requirement before order release. |
| 201 / 430 | Sheet | 0.5–6.0 mm | 2B, BA, No.4 | Project review | Grade selection should be based on corrosion environment, forming demand and magnetic requirement rather than price alone. |
| Duplex 2205 | Sheet / plate | 1–16 mm | 2B or No.1 where available | Project-specific | Material sourcing, process parameters and downstream welding requirements should be reviewed together. |
Important: the listed ranges are quoting guidance, not a claim of real-time stock or a guaranteed machine limit. Final availability and process capability must be confirmed on the approved quotation.
Processing Capability
The useful capability statement is not only machine power. A quote should connect material thickness, part geometry, cutting gas, edge requirement, tolerance, inspection method and file revision so the buyer knows what will actually be accepted.
Confirm revision, material, thickness, critical dimensions, cosmetic faces and acceptance notes.
Review part orientation, web spacing, kerf compensation and sheet utilization before release.
Select parameters and assist gas according to grade, thickness and required edge condition.
Keep as-cut edges or apply deburring / edge break where the drawing or handling requirement calls for it.
Verify defined features, protect cosmetic surfaces and package parts according to shipment needs.
| Process item | Method / equipment class | Typical quoting envelope | Expected result | Inspection / control |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2D profile cutting | Fiber laser cutting cell | 0.5–20 mm stainless; 1500 × 3000 mm standard sheet basis | Fast contour cutting with narrow kerf and limited local heat input | First-piece and final dimensional checks against approved drawing |
| Clean stainless edge | High-pressure nitrogen assist where specified | Grade and thickness dependent | Reduces oxide scale on the cut edge and supports cleaner downstream finishing | Visual edge inspection plus drawing-defined dimensional checks |
| Small holes / narrow webs | Geometry-specific parameter review | Features close to material thickness require review | Avoids unstable pierce quality, excessive heat concentration or feature distortion | Critical hole / slot size checked with appropriate gauges or calipers |
| Deburring / edge break | Mechanical or manual finishing as specified | Selected cut parts or full lot | Removes loose burr and improves handling safety before assembly | Visual and tactile inspection; dimension impact considered on critical edges |
| Drawing data | CAM + engineering review | DXF / DWG preferred for 2D; STEP / PDF for verification | One controlled geometry source with dimensions and notes cross-checked before production | Revision control and file-name check at order release |
Use a real machine photo and state the verified work envelope and responsible process owner.
One representative photo can show the cut edge, cosmetic handling and the inspection method used for released parts.
Capability note: final machine envelope, tolerance and secondary operation availability must be stated on the quotation. Do not treat the general guidance on this page as an order acceptance without drawing review.
Applications & Limits
Laser cutting is a manufacturing process, not a substitute for material selection. The grade must still be chosen for corrosion, temperature, cleaning, strength and fabrication requirements.
Useful for vent patterns, cable openings, mounting holes and perimeter profiles. Call out bend lines separately if forming follows cutting.
316L or other suitable grades may be selected where corrosion and cleaning demands are higher. Edge and surface finishing still need separate specification.
Good for repeated patterns and custom openings. Cosmetic face, film direction and scratch protection should be identified before nesting.
Laser cutting supports frequent design changes without dedicated blanking dies and works well for mixed small and medium batch profiles.
Slots, cutouts and repeatable hole patterns can be combined in one cutting program before bending, fastening or welding.
The same digital geometry can support early prototypes and later batch production, provided revision control and material condition remain consistent.
Tolerance, QA & Acceptance
A tolerance value only becomes useful when it is connected to the material thickness, feature type, inspection method and drawing revision. Critical dimensions should be identified rather than applying the tightest tolerance to every cut edge.
Confirm grade, thickness, heat/lot data and requested MTC before production.
Match DXF/DWG geometry to the dimensioned PDF and approved revision.
Measure the critical dimensions defined for production release.
Monitor edge condition, repeat features and surface protection during the run.
Complete final checks and attach the agreed material / inspection documents.
| Material / feature | Starting guidance | What changes it |
|---|---|---|
| 0.5–3 mm sheet profile | Approx. ±0.10 to ±0.20 mm | Part size, contour complexity, thermal concentration and surface condition |
| 3–10 mm plate profile | Approx. ±0.15 to ±0.30 mm | Thickness, edge taper, part size and cut sequence |
| 10–20 mm plate profile | Approx. ±0.25 to ±0.50 mm | Thickness, pierce method, dross acceptance and geometry |
| Small holes / slots | Review individually | Feature size relative to thickness, hole roundness and measurement method |
| Critical position / pattern | Drawing-specific | Datum strategy, overall part size and inspection capability |
Critical features can be recorded with the agreed sampling plan and drawing revision.
Request the applicable material certificate and traceability requirement in the RFQ.
Available only when it is included in the quotation and order document package.
Define burr, dross, oxide, scratch and cosmetic face requirements when they matter to use or appearance.
Calipers, micrometers, pin gauges, height gauges, fixtures or CMM may be selected according to feature type and required uncertainty.
Tolerance disclaimer: these ranges are general RFQ guidance, not a guaranteed capability for every part. The accepted tolerance is the value stated on the reviewed quotation and approved drawing.
Standards & Equivalence
Equivalent grade names are useful for communication, but they are not automatically interchangeable. Chemistry, mechanical properties, product form, heat treatment and the governing product standard must align with the purchase requirement.
| Common grade | UNS | EN designation | JIS | Common GB designation | Typical flat-product standards |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 304 | S30400 | 1.4301 | SUS304 | 06Cr19Ni10 | ASTM A240/A240M, EN 10088-2, JIS G4304/G4305, GB/T 4237 or GB/T 3280 as applicable |
| 304L | S30403 | 1.4307 | SUS304L | 022Cr19Ni10 | Product standard must match the required form and delivery condition |
| 316 | S31600 | 1.4401 | SUS316 | 06Cr17Ni12Mo2 | Verify molybdenum-bearing grade requirement and requested certification |
| 316L | S31603 | 1.4404 | SUS316L | 022Cr17Ni12Mo2 | Commonly specified where low carbon content supports welding / corrosion requirements |
| 430 | S43000 | 1.4016 | SUS430 | 10Cr17 | Ferritic stainless; application environment and forming demand should be checked |
| Duplex 2205 | S32205 / S31803 | 1.4462 | SUS329J3L family | 022Cr23Ni5Mo3N family | Confirm exact chemistry / strength requirements and product standard before substitution |
Do not substitute one designation for another only because the names appear in the same row.
Confirm chemistry, mechanical properties, corrosion requirement, product form, thickness range, surface condition and certification against the governing purchase standard.
Worked Example
This is a worked engineering example, not a named customer claim. It shows the information that should be resolved before a laser-cut stainless part is released for production.
The geometry favors a digital cutting process because no dedicated blanking tool is required for each design revision.
The drawing should identify the visible face, bend relationship and which dimensions remain critical after later forming operations.
Use nitrogen for a cleaner stainless edge, preserve surface protection according to the approved process plan and deburr only where the drawing or handling requirement needs it.
Check selected hole / slot sizes, feature positions, overall profile and cosmetic handling before the batch is fully released.
Production should follow the approved revision, accepted tolerance, material certification requirement, edge condition, packing method and agreed inspection record.
For publication as a first-party case study, replace this worked example with a verified order or project record and only state outcomes that can be supported by internal evidence and permission.
Technical Basis & Review
Material-standard facts should come from the governing standards, while process capability should come from verified equipment, inspection records and approved internal data. Recommendations should be separated from guaranteed order requirements.
Technical RFQ
Send the drawing and the commercial requirements together. The more complete the input, the faster the process route and acceptance criteria can be reviewed.
