304 vs 316 Selector

How the conditions are used
Dry indoor conditions may support 304 as a starting candidate. Outdoor locations need site-specific assessment.
Salt, chlorides or aggressive cleaning trigger a corrosion review. Budget cannot override the service requirements.
For welded work, assess low-carbon grades and the applicable fabrication specification. Welding alone does not decide between the 304 and 316 families.

Information needed for final selection
Document chemicals and concentrations, maximum operating temperature, exposure time, immersion, stress, deposits and crevices. Include the surface condition and cleaning procedure. These inputs are not captured by this short tool, so its output is not a material approval.

Source and limits
Outokumpu’s corrosion resistance guide describes the influence of chlorides, temperature, pH and local conditions. Both 304 and 316 can be unsuitable in demanding service. Have the responsible materials specialist confirm the grade against the actual process specification.
The decision rules are a screening workflow, not a numerical corrosion model. Branch logic checked on 2026-09-04.
