Industry solution · material selection
Specify pulp and paper stainless by mill process, alkali or acid chemistry, chloride, oxidant, temperature, pressure, solids, wear and shutdown cleaning. The best stainless steel for pulp and paper changes between digesting, washing, bleaching, recovery, stock preparation and paper-machine duties.

Separate wood handling, digestion, bleaching, recovery and paper-machine environments.
316L can perform poorly in specific hot alkaline pulp-mill conditions.
Duplex strength can reduce tank thickness while corrosion chemistry sets the grade.
Pulp and paper environments range from hot alkali to acidic chlorine and warm chloride water. Bulk chemistry, residual oxidant, deposits, temperature and weld condition must be evaluated for each process stage.
| Grade / designation | Structure | Pulp/paper screening role | Primary benefit | Critical confirmation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 304L / 1.4307 / S30403 | Austenitic | Mild stock, water and general mill equipment | Availability and fabrication | Temperature, chlorides and cleaning chemistry |
| 2304 / 1.4362 / S32304 | Lean duplex | Hot alkaline tanks and large vessels | Strength and alkali/SCC performance | Exact liquor, welding and temperature |
| 2205 / 1.4462 / S32205 | Duplex | Digesters, washers, vessels and warm chlorides | Strength and chloride-SCC resistance | Weld phase balance and process limits |
| 2507 / 254 SMO / 904L route | Super duplex/high-alloy austenitic | Bleach plant and acidic chlorine equipment | High localized/general corrosion margin | Oxidant, acidity, temperature and availability |
Conditions: Values are screening references at the stated product condition. Temperature capability, dimensional tolerances and acceptance properties must be fixed for the ordered product form. Start with the stainless steel grade directory, then request the applicable certificate and datasheet.

Availability is confirmed at quotation. Every RFQ should identify product form, dimensions, condition, finish, edge, inspection evidence and downstream process.
| Product form | Starting grade | Condition / finish | Critical confirmation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Digester/tank plate | 2304 or 2205 by liquor | Hot-rolled plate, formed and welded | Uniform corrosion, strength, weld and NDE |
| Bleach-plant pipe and vessel | 2507, 254 SMO or 904L | Pipe, plate and fittings | Chlorine species, pH, temperature and corrosion test |
| Paper-machine component | 316L or duplex | Sheet, bar, tube and machined part | Fatigue, wear, finish and deposit retention |
| Heat-exchanger tube | 316L, duplex or high alloy | Thin-wall welded/seamless tube | Both-side chemistry, velocity and tube joint |
A useful quotation is conditional, not generic. The pulp and paper stainless supplier should confirm mill route, minimum order, certificate, tolerances and delivery condition against the finished component.
Selection separates the primary advantage from the failure mode and fabrication burden. Review related industry solutions when the component crosses multiple service categories.
| Duty | Starting option | Advantage | Limitation | Alternative |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hot alkaline pulp liquor | 2304/2205 | Duplex strength and alkali/SCC performance | Concentration and temperature control | 304L only where proven |
| Acidic chlorine bleaching | 2507/254 SMO/904L | High alloy and PREN/CPT margin | Oxidant and acidity can be extreme | Titanium or nickel alloy after testing |
| Warm chloride water | 2205 | Chloride-SCC resistance | Crevices and deposits remain | 2507 for higher temperature/chloride |
| Paper-machine wet end | 316L/2205 | Fabricability, strength and clean surface | Cyclic load and deposit wear | Higher alloy in severe chemical zones |
Each card uses the same five-point structure so service, grade, reason, limitation and maintenance can be checked without leaving gaps.
Designations from ASTM, EN, UNS, ISO or a manufacturer range are not automatically interchangeable. Match chemistry, properties, product form, condition and test requirements.
| Standard / reference | Role | Procurement caveat |
|---|---|---|
| ASTM A240 / EN 10088 | Flat-product requirements for tanks and equipment | Specify grade, condition, thickness, finish and tests. |
| ASTM A789 / A790 | Duplex tube and pipe requirements | Match product form, heat treatment, dimensions and tests. |
| ASME BPVC Section VIII | Pressure vessels where adopted | Use code-listed materials, welding, examination and data reports. |
| ASTM G48 where specified | Localized-corrosion test for duplex/high-alloy material | State method, temperature, sampling and acceptance. |
Lean duplex, 2205, 2507, 254 SMO and 904L fit different mill stages; chemistry, temperature, solids, pressure and welding decide.
Its molybdenum-bearing chemistry does not guarantee resistance to every hot alkaline pulp liquor; process-specific corrosion data are required.
2507, 254 SMO and 904L are common screening options for acidic chlorine environments, subject to exact oxidant, pH and temperature.
Its higher strength can reduce thickness and weight while offering strong resistance in many alkaline and chloride environments.
Heat input, interpass temperature, filler, shielding, heat treatment where applicable, ferrite/phase balance, NDE and corrosion acceptance.
Include process stage, liquor/chemical analysis, pH, chlorides, oxidant, temperature, pressure, solids, grade, form, welds, tests and delivery.
This illustrative engineering workflow shows how a service requirement becomes a material and supply specification. Final recommendations depend on the confirmed design, manufacturing route, inspection plan and finished-product validation.
A vessel must handle acidic chlorine-bearing liquor with cyclic cleaning and high availability.
pH, residual oxidant, chlorides, temperature, pressure, solids, welds and cleaning are fixed.
Compare 2507, 254 SMO and 904L using corrosion data and fabrication capability.
Order code-compliant plate and fittings with controlled welding, PMI, NDE and corrosion-test requirements.
Release after certificates, PMI, weld/NDE review, corrosion tests, pressure test and surface inspection.
