Specify power-generation stainless by plant type, steam or gas temperature, pressure, water chemistry, chlorides, cycling duty, creep life and governing code. The best stainless steel for power generation changes between boiler, turbine, condenser, cooling and emissions systems.

Separate boiler, steam, condenser, cooling-water, HRSG and emissions circuits.
Creep, thermal fatigue, FAC, pitting and flue-gas acid condensation require different materials.
High-temperature grades and cooling-water alloys solve different failure modes.
Mechanical properties and allowable stresses vary with temperature, thickness, product form and code edition. The table is a screening map, not a boiler or piping design calculation.
| Grade / designation | Structure | Power-plant role | Primary benefit | Critical review |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 316L / 1.4404 / S31603 | Austenitic | Cooling water, condensate and selected scrubber duty | Mo-bearing localized-corrosion margin | Chlorides, crevices and temperature |
| 304H / S30409 | Austenitic | Selected hot piping/tube components | Controlled carbon for creep strength | Code allowables and sensitization |
| 347H / S34709 | Stabilized austenitic | High-temperature welded components | Niobium stabilization and creep route | Weld procedure and long-term aging |
| 2205 / S32205 | Duplex | Chloride cooling-water piping and exchangers | Strength and chloride-SCC resistance | Temperature limit and phase balance |
Conditions: Values are screening references at the stated product condition. Temperature capability, dimensional tolerances and acceptance properties must be fixed for the ordered product form. Start with the stainless steel grade directory, then request the applicable certificate and datasheet.

Availability is confirmed at quotation. Every RFQ should identify product form, dimensions, condition, finish, edge, inspection evidence and downstream process.
| Product form | Starting grade | Condition / finish | Critical confirmation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Boiler or HRSG tube | 304H, 347H or code-selected alloy | Seamless/welded heat-treated tube | Allowable stress, OD/wall and creep data |
| Power piping | Code-listed stainless or alloy | Seamless/welded pipe and fittings | B31.1 class, schedule, welding and PWHT |
| Condenser/exchanger tube | 316L, duplex or higher alloy | Thin-wall tube with controlled condition | Water chemistry, velocity, deposits and tube sheet |
| Scrubber plate and duct | 316L, duplex or high alloy | Plate, sheet and welded construction | Acid dew point, chlorides and wash-down |
A useful quotation is conditional, not generic. The power generation stainless supplier should confirm mill route, minimum order, certificate, tolerances and delivery condition against the finished component.
Selection separates the primary advantage from the failure mode and fabrication burden. Review related industry solutions when the component crosses multiple service categories.
| Duty | Starting option | Advantage | Limitation | Alternative |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Moderate condensate/water system | 316L | Fabrication and corrosion margin | Hot chloride SCC/crevices | 2205 for suitable chloride duty |
| High-temperature steam component | 304H or 347H | Creep-strength route in code-listed form | Thermal fatigue and long-term aging | Nickel alloy where temperature requires |
| Seawater cooling circuit | 2205 or 2507 | Strength and chloride resistance | Biofouling, crevices and duplex welding | 6Mo or titanium after system review |
| Wet flue-gas scrubber | 316L to high alloy by chemistry | Formable corrosion-resistant plate | Acid condensate and chlorides can be severe | 6Mo or nickel alloy in severe zones |
Each card uses the same five-point structure so service, grade, reason, limitation and maintenance can be checked without leaving gaps.
Designations from ASTM, EN, UNS, ISO or a manufacturer range are not automatically interchangeable. Match chemistry, properties, product form, condition and test requirements.
| Standard / reference | Role | Procurement caveat |
|---|---|---|
| ASME BPVC Section I | Power-boiler construction | Use code-listed materials, design rules, examination and certification. |
| ASME B31.1 | Power piping | Covers design, materials, fabrication, testing, inspection and maintenance. |
| ASME BPVC Section II | Material specifications and properties | Use the adopted edition for allowable property data. |
| ASTM A213 / A312 | Boiler/exchanger tube and pipe product routes | Match grade, form, heat treatment and testing to the component. |
The plant system controls the answer: hot steam needs temperature and creep capability, while cooling and flue-gas systems need corrosion resistance.
It may suit defined lower-temperature duties, but high-temperature power piping requires code allowable stresses and often H-grade or other alloys.
It is a stabilized austenitic route used for selected elevated-temperature welded components where its code properties and fabrication suit the design.
Duplex can suit chloride cooling-water systems where its strength and SCC resistance justify phase-balance and welding controls.
Water chemistry, deposits, crevices, velocity, erosion, biofouling, galvanic effects and tube-sheet details all contribute.
Include plant/system, fluid, temperature, pressure, cycles, water/flue chemistry, code, grade, dimensions, welding, tests and records.
This illustrative engineering workflow shows how a service requirement becomes a material and supply specification. Final recommendations depend on the confirmed design, manufacturing route, inspection plan and finished-product validation.
A cooling-water circuit must handle chloride seawater, chlorination and frequent cycling.
Temperature, chlorides, oxidant, flow, deposits, pressure and shutdown stagnation are fixed.
Compare 316L, 2205 and 2507 for pipe, fittings and exchanger compatibility.
Order code-compliant product with heat treatment, dimensions, welding and corrosion-test requirements.
Release after certificates, PMI, phase/corrosion testing, weld NDE and pressure test.
