M03 · Grade specification / availability

Specify the fastener grade inside the correct standard route.

A stainless alloy name alone does not fully define a fastener. The purchase specification also needs the fastener standard, fastener type, property class or condition, thread system, dimensional standard and any supplementary acceptance requirements.

General corrosion resistance

304 / 304L-type route

Common austenitic stainless families appear in ASTM F593/F594 alloy group 1. The exact alloy, condition and fastener designation must follow the ordered specification rather than a generic “304 bolt” description.

  • Confirm F593 / F594 applicability
  • State fastener type and size
  • Confirm mechanical / proof requirements
Molybdenum-bearing austenitic

316 / 316L-type route

ASTM F593/F594 alloy group 2 includes 316 and 316L. Use service environment and the governing fastener specification to select the actual grade and condition.

  • Review chloride exposure
  • Do not assume universal marine suitability
  • Match compatible nut specification
Special strength / hardness route

410 / 431 / 630 families

Martensitic and precipitation-hardening stainless fasteners can use different heat-treatment and mechanical-property routes from austenitic fasteners. The exact standard and condition are essential.

  • Heat-treatment condition matters
  • Corrosion resistance differs by grade
  • Verify marking and test requirements
ISO metric route

A2 / A4 and other ISO 3506 designations

ISO 3506 uses stainless fastener grades together with specified property classes. A2 and A4 are fastener material designations and should not be treated as automatic one-to-one substitutes for a specific ASTM alloy or UNS grade.

  • State ISO 3506 part
  • State property class
  • Check thread and dimensional standard

Availability must be confirmed by the complete fastener combination.

This page does not claim stock for every grade, property class, diameter, length, thread, head style, nut style, washer form or finish. A valid quotation should confirm the exact specification and current supplier capability.

M04 · Technical data tables

Build the fastener specification from standard, thread, geometry and acceptance criteria.

Do not copy generic strength, torque or dimension values into the purchase order. Numeric acceptance limits depend on the governing product standard, fastener size, grade / property class, condition, thread system and joint design.

Specification field What to state Why it matters
Fastener type Bolt, hex cap screw, machine screw, socket screw, stud, nut, flat washer or special drawing item. Different products use different product, dimensional and mechanical standards.
Product standard ASTM F593/F594, ISO 3506 part, ASTM A193/A194 or approved project / customer specification and edition. Defines the material / mechanical route and applicable tests.
Material designation Exact alloy / grade, ASTM alloy group, ISO stainless grade or project designation. Controls chemistry and corrosion / heat-treatment family.
Property class / condition Required ISO property class, ASTM condition or heat-treatment condition where applicable. Grade alone does not establish the required mechanical performance.
Thread system UNC, UNF, ISO metric coarse / fine or drawing-defined thread; state pitch or TPI and tolerance class when required. Prevents mating and inspection errors.
Nominal size & length Diameter, overall length, thread length and any unthreaded grip requirement. Defines fit and clamp geometry.
Head / nut / washer geometry Applicable dimensional standard, style, drive, width across flats, washer OD / ID / thickness or drawing reference. Material standards do not necessarily define every product dimension.
Surface / passivation As-manufactured, cleaned / passivated or project-specific finish only when a recognized specification is stated. Finish affects corrosion behavior, cleanliness, friction and inspection.
Mechanical acceptance Tensile / proof load / hardness / wedge or other tests as required by the governing standard. Use standard-specific limits for the actual size and condition.
Marking & traceability Required head / nut marking, lot identification, MTC / test report and inspection level. Supports incoming inspection and material control.
Commercial fields Quantity by item, packaging, destination, delivery window and any split-shipment constraint. Turns the technical description into a quote-ready request.
Important: torque is a joint-design parameter, not a universal stainless-fastener property. Friction, lubrication, surface condition, thread form, preload target, mating materials and application risk must be considered before publishing or applying a torque value.

M05 · Sizes, forms and finishes matrix

Define fastener family, thread, dimensions and finish together.

“M10 stainless bolt” or “1/2-inch 316 nut” is usually not enough for procurement. The RFQ should identify the full product form and the dimensional / mechanical standard that controls it.

Minimum fastener brief

  • Type: bolt / screw / stud / nut / washer / special.
  • Standard: material / mechanical standard + dimensional standard.
  • Grade: alloy designation + property class or condition.
  • Thread: system, nominal size, pitch / TPI and tolerance class.
  • Dimensions: length, thread length, head / nut / washer geometry.
  • Finish: passivation / cleaning / coating only when specified.
  • Acceptance: test report, marking, inspection and packaging.
Fastener family Typical RFQ fields Supplier question to resolve
Bolts / hex cap screws Standard + grade + diameter / thread + length + head dimensional standard + condition / property class. Does the requested product standard cover the exact diameter, length and head form?
Machine / socket screws Drive / head style + thread + length + product / mechanical specification + dimensional standard. Which material and mechanical standard is contractually required for this screw type?
Studs Diameter + thread form + overall / engagement lengths + end configuration + grade / condition. Is this general-service bolting or pressure / temperature service requiring a different standard route?
Nuts Matching bolt route + nut standard + style + thread + proof / property requirement + dimensions. Is the nut mechanically compatible with the specified externally threaded fastener?
Flat washers Material / property standard + dimensional standard + ID + OD + thickness + finish. Is a generic commercial washer acceptable, or is a specified stainless washer standard required?
Special / drawing parts Controlled drawing + material + threads + tolerances + heat treatment / condition + surface + inspection. Which drawing dimensions and characteristics are critical-to-quality?

M06 · Selection / comparison

Choose the standard route before comparing grades or prices.

The same words — stainless bolt, nut or stud — can point to materially different acceptance routes. Use the application and contract requirement to choose the correct standard family first.

General inch-series corrosion-resistant fasteners

ASTM F593 + F594 route

F593 covers stainless bolts, hex cap screws and studs for general corrosion-resistant service; F594 covers compatible stainless nuts. Confirm dimensional standards separately where required.

Use when:the project calls for these ASTM fastener specifications.
ISO metric stainless fasteners

ISO 3506 route

ISO 3506-1 covers bolts, screws and studs; ISO 3506-2 covers nuts; ISO 3506-7 covers flat washers. Grade and property class are specified together.

Use when:metric stainless fasteners are contractually specified to the ISO 3506 system.
Pressure / high-temperature bolting

ASTM A193 + A194 route

A193/A193M covers alloy and stainless bolting for high-temperature / high-pressure or other special-purpose applications; A194/A194M covers corresponding high-pressure / high-temperature nuts.

Use when:the service, code or project specification calls for pressure-service bolting.
Special geometry / customer-controlled parts

Drawing + referenced standards

For special heads, shoulders, captive features or non-standard geometry, use an approved drawing together with the applicable material, thread, mechanical, finish and inspection specifications.

Use when:the drawing controls dimensions that a general fastener standard does not.
Do not substitute by name alone: “304”, “A2”, “B8” and other familiar stainless labels belong to different specification systems. Equivalence requires review of chemistry, condition / property class, mechanical requirements, dimensions, marking and the intended service.

M08 · Applications + limitations

Select stainless fasteners for the joint and environment — not from the alloy name alone.

Fastener performance depends on material, property class / condition, preload, mating materials, environment, temperature, thread friction and installation practice.

01

General industrial assemblies

Corrosion-resistant bolts, screws, studs and nuts can be suitable where the specified grade and mechanical route meet the equipment design and environment.

02

Food / process equipment

Material choice, cleanability, surface condition and contamination control can be as important as nominal corrosion resistance. Project hygiene specifications may add requirements.

03

Marine / chloride exposure

Molybdenum-bearing or higher-alloy routes may be considered, but stainless is not immune to pitting, crevice corrosion or stress-corrosion cracking.

04

Outdoor / architectural joints

Exposure, drainage, dissimilar-metal contact, finish appearance and maintenance should be reviewed alongside grade and fastener geometry.

05

Pressure / temperature service

Use the project code and specified bolting standard. General F593/F594 or ISO 3506 fasteners should not be assumed to replace pressure-service bolting requirements.

06

Custom fastening systems

Special heads, captive elements, shoulders or drawing-controlled parts need drawing revision control, tolerances and inspection criteria in addition to the stainless grade.

Important limitations before supplier approval

  • Galling: austenitic stainless threaded pairs can be susceptible to adhesive wear / seizure; installation method, finish, lubrication policy and speed can matter.
  • Corrosion: stainless steel is corrosion resistant, not corrosion proof. Chlorides, crevices, deposits, temperature and cleaning chemistry can change grade suitability.
  • Strength and preload: do not apply carbon-steel torque tables to stainless fasteners without joint-specific engineering review.
  • Temperature: mechanical and corrosion behavior can change outside the standard’s stated test / application range; special bolting standards may be required.
  • Magnetism: stainless grade family and cold work can affect magnetic response; “non-magnetic” should not be assumed from the word stainless.
  • Compatibility: bolt and nut must be selected as a compatible mechanical pair under the specified standard system.

M10 · Standards and equivalence

Use official fastener standards to define product scope and acceptance.

These standards are reference routes, not proof that every listed item is available. The purchase order should identify the applicable edition and any project-specific supplementary requirements.

M11 · FAQ / direct answers

Stainless steel fasteners FAQ

What are stainless steel fasteners?

Stainless steel fasteners are corrosion-resistant fastening components such as bolts, screws, studs, nuts and washers made to a specified stainless material and fastener standard. A complete specification normally includes product type, grade / designation, property class or condition, thread, dimensions and acceptance requirements.

What is the difference between A2 / A4 fasteners and 304 / 316 fasteners?

A2 and A4 are designations used within the ISO stainless-fastener system, while 304 and 316 are familiar stainless alloy designations used in other material systems. They are related material families but should not be treated as automatic one-to-one contractual equivalents. Review the governing standard, chemistry, property class / condition and service requirements.

Which ASTM standards cover stainless steel bolts and nuts?

ASTM F593 covers stainless steel bolts, hex cap screws and studs for general corrosion-resistant service, while ASTM F594 covers stainless steel nuts. Pressure or high-temperature service may instead call for standards such as ASTM A193/A193M and A194/A194M.

Why can stainless steel threads gall?

Stainless threaded pairs, especially austenitic grades, can experience adhesive wear and seizure under unfavorable friction and installation conditions. Joint design, surface condition, lubrication policy, speed, preload and mating material should be reviewed rather than relying on a generic torque value.

What information should I send to a stainless steel fasteners supplier?

Send the fastener type, governing material / mechanical standard, dimensional standard or drawing, exact grade or fastener designation, property class / condition, thread size and pitch, length and critical dimensions, finish, inspection / traceability needs, quantity, destination and target delivery.
