Product overview

What to define before buying stainless steel channel

A channel order should identify the profile geometry and the way the section is produced. Web depth, flange width and thickness may look similar across products while corner radius, taper, straightness and finish can differ by route.

Material304 / 304L

Common for general fabrication, equipment frames, supports and architectural work in moderate environments.

Material316 / 316L

Frequently selected for coastal, washdown, chemical and other more demanding corrosion conditions.

GeometryWeb × flange × thickness

State the channel dimensions directly, for example 100 × 50 × 5 mm, plus length and any critical radius or tolerance.

Profile routeHot rolled, welded or formed

The production route affects section geometry, corner radius, dimensional tolerance, surface condition and cost.

M03 · Grade selection

Choose the grade from corrosion, welding and service needs

Stainless channels are commonly welded into frames, supports and equipment structures. Grade selection should follow the actual environment, fabrication route and maintenance conditions rather than only the nominal section size.

304
General purpose

Widely used for frames, brackets, equipment supports, architectural fabrication and general stainless structures.

304L
Weld-friendly low carbon

Common where substantial welding is expected and a low-carbon 304 route is preferred.

316
Higher corrosion resistance

Often considered for marine-adjacent, chemical, washdown and more chloride-exposed service.

316L
Corrosion + welding route

Frequently specified where both welding and improved chloride resistance are important.

Common stainless steel channel size reference

The dimensions below are common market-style channel references for early design and RFQ preparation. Exact stock and dimensional series vary with grade, whether the channel is rolled or formed, and the supplier's manufacturing route.

120 × 60 × 5 mm 304 / 316L Rolled / welded / fabricated Industrial support structures Confirm flange taper or parallel-flange requirement
150 × 75 × 6 mm 304 / 316L Heavy welded / rolled profile Platforms and heavier frames Mill route and tolerance become important
200 × 75 × 6–8 mm 304 / 316L / project grades Rolled / welded / fabricated Heavy-duty support work Check actual standard series and load design

Market reference only: stainless channels are available in multiple dimensional series, from light formed profiles to much heavier structural channels. For procurement, always state the complete section geometry, grade, production route, length and any critical tolerance or finish.

M05 · Dimensions and finish

Define the channel profile, production route and finish

Two channels with the same nominal depth may have different flange widths, corner radii, wall thickness, taper and surface condition. These details should be controlled when they affect fit-up or appearance.

Dimensions

  • Web depth (H)
  • Flange width (B)
  • Thickness (t)
  • Inside radius / corner geometry when critical
  • Standard length or cut length
  • Straightness / twist tolerance when assembly-critical

Profile route

  • Hot-rolled structural channel
  • Cold-formed / brake-formed channel
  • Laser-welded channel
  • Built-up / fabricated channel
  • Parallel flange or tapered flange where relevant

Surface & processing

  • Hot-finished / pickled mill surface
  • 2B / bright formed route
  • Brushed / No.4 cosmetic surface
  • Cut, drilled, slotted or machined ends
  • Protective film / packing for visible surfaces

M06 · Selection guide

Match the channel route to the application

General welded fabrication304L is a common starting point for frames and supports when substantial welding is expected and the environment is not highly aggressive.
Visible architectural workSpecify brushed or polished faces, corner appearance and scratch protection rather than ordering only by section size.
Heavier structural supportConfirm whether the design needs a rolled structural series or whether a formed / welded channel is acceptable. Section properties and tolerances may differ.
Coastal / chloride exposure316 / 316L is commonly considered before 304, but the real environment, design and maintenance conditions still control grade selection.

A useful RFQ identifies both the section geometry and the production route so the supplier can compare the request with the correct profile family.

M08 · Applications

Where stainless steel channel is commonly used

Frames & skids

Welded equipment bases, support frames and stainless fabrication where open-section stiffness is useful.

Brackets & supports

Wall supports, equipment mounts, reinforcement members and fabricated structural components.

Platforms & walkways

Support members for industrial platforms, access systems and stainless service structures.

Architectural framing

Visible rails, façade support, trim and decorative channel details requiring a controlled finish.

Food & process equipment

Framework and machine supports where corrosion resistance, washdown and cleanability matter.

Marine / outdoor structures

316 / 316L channels are commonly considered for more demanding chloride exposure.

Important limitation: “stainless steel channel” is not one single geometry. Hot-rolled structural channels, cold-formed channels, laser-welded channels and press-brake fabricated sections can differ in flange taper, inside radius, straightness, mechanical properties and tolerance. If these details affect the design, identify the required production route and dimensional standard rather than ordering only by H × B × t.

Project controlDrawing / purchase specification

For section geometry, radius, flange taper, finish, cutting, welding, inspection or tighter tolerance, state the requirement directly on the RFQ or drawing.

M11 · FAQ

Stainless steel channel FAQ

How is stainless steel channel sized?
A practical buying format is web depth × flange width × thickness, followed by length. For example, 100 × 50 × 5 mm channel in 6 m lengths. Add the grade, profile route, finish and any critical radius or tolerance.
What grades are most common?
304 / 304L and 316 / 316L are among the most common stainless channel grades. The correct choice depends on corrosion exposure, welding and the final service environment.
What is the difference between rolled and formed channel?
Rolled channel is produced as a structural shape, while formed channel is bent from strip, sheet or plate. Corner radius, flange geometry, dimensional tolerance and mechanical properties can differ, so specify the route when it matters.
Can stainless channel be polished?
Yes. Formed and fabricated channels are often available with brushed or polished visible surfaces. Specify which faces require a cosmetic finish and whether protective film or special packing is needed.
Which standard is commonly used for stainless channel?
ASTM A276/A276M is a common stainless bars-and-shapes route, with ASTM A484/A484M providing general requirements. The final project drawing and purchase specification should control the order.
