Calculation basis and limits
This stainless steel sheet weight calculator helps buyers estimate material weight before requesting a quote, planning freight, or comparing thickness options. It is useful for 304, 316, 304L, 316L, 201, 430, and other stainless steel sheet grades when you know the sheet length, width, and thickness.
Mass equals geometric volume multiplied by density. All dimensions must be positive; quantity must be a positive whole number. This stainless steel estimator accepts density from 6 to 10 g/cm³. Confirm the actual grade and temperature-specific density; do not enter kg/m³ in this field.
1 mm³ = 0.001 cm³ and 1000 g = 1 kg. Calculations retain precision until display; results below 0.01 use scientific notation rather than appearing as zero. Packing, weld reinforcement, dimensional tolerances and cut losses are excluded. Arithmetic and input checks verified on 2026-09-04.
Calculation Method
Formula and Worked Example
Formula
Weight kg = length mm x width mm x thickness mm x density g/cm3 / 1,000,000. The default 7.93 g/cm3 is an editable planning assumption, not a certified density for every grade. Use the project-specific density if your specification requires a different value.
Example
A 2440 × 1220 × 1.5 mm sheet at an assumed density of 7.93 g/cm³ weighs 35.409036 kg, displayed as 35.41 kg. Ten sheets total 354.09 kg before packing.
Quote Use
How to use this estimate in a quote
The calculated result should be treated as a planning weight, not the final certified shipment weight. Stainless steel orders can vary because of thickness tolerance, length tolerance, edge trimming, surface finish, protective film, wooden packing, pallets, and moisture protection. For early quotation work, the calculator is useful because it lets a buyer compare several size or thickness options before asking for a formal price.
When sending an inquiry, include the calculated weight together with the grade, product form, dimensions, quantity, surface finish, standard, application, and destination country. This helps the supplier check whether the requested item is a stock size, a cut-to-length item, a slitting order, or a custom production order. If the project is urgent, also state the target delivery date and packing preference.
Weight Notes
What can change the final weight
- Actual production tolerance may make the delivered material slightly heavier or lighter.
- Protective film, paper interleaving, wooden cases, pallets, and straps add packing weight.
- Cutting, trimming, machining, and slitting can create material loss.
- Different stainless grades can use slightly different density assumptions.

Density references for sheet weight estimates
Use the following public density references when an exact mill certificate is not yet available. Packing, pallet and container weight must be added separately.
| Material family | Reference density | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| 304 / 316 / 316L stainless | About 8.00 g/cm³ | Preliminary sheet or plate weight estimate |
| Duplex 2205 | About 7.80 g/cm³ | Use when the order is specifically identified as 2205 |
| Super duplex 2507 | About 7.85 g/cm³ | Confirm exact grade and certificate for final weight |
