Stainless Steel Surface Finish
Satin Stainless Steel Finish
Specifications, Supply & Technical Guide
Satin stainless steel finish is a low-gloss decorative surface condition selected for a refined, consistent appearance. For procurement, the finish should be defined by the approved sample, surface roughness requirement, production route, visual tolerance, substrate grade, product form and protection method rather than by the word “satin” alone.

Finish Definition
What is a satin stainless steel finish?
A satin stainless steel finish is a refined, low-gloss surface appearance produced by a controlled finishing route. Depending on the agreed process, the surface may show a subtle directional texture or a more uniform matte-to-satin visual character.
The commercial term “satin” should not be treated as a complete technical specification. The purchase requirement should define the actual surface target, approved appearance sample and measurable roughness criteria when those values are important.
For appearance-critical applications, approve the finish under controlled lighting and record the visual limit, grain character, reflectivity or color tolerance and defect acceptance before production.
Define these points before approving a satin finish
- Stainless steel grade and product form
- Production / abrasive finishing route
- Ra / Rz requirement when measurable roughness is critical
- Reflectivity / color tolerance where applicable
- Approved sample and finish-limit reference
- Protective film, handling and packaging requirement
- Defect acceptance and cleaning guidance
Finish Evidence
Technical and application evidence for satin finish approval
To keep the page cleaner, the evidence requirement is consolidated into two image positions. Replace these placeholders with real production evidence before final technical approval.

Technical evidence image
Use one combined image showing the actual satin surface, sample panel and, where available, the Ra / Rz measurement or approved finish-limit comparison.

Application image
Use one real application or fabricated-part photo that clearly shows the satin stainless steel appearance in use.
Supply Specification
Satin finish stainless sheet, coil and fabricated part ordering matrix
Define the substrate, dimensions, satin surface requirement, approved visual reference and protection method together. The table below is an RFQ checklist and does not represent live inventory.
Specify grade, thickness, width, length, visible side, surface target and protective film.
Define width, coil requirements, surface limits and downstream processing needs.
Provide drawings, visible-face notes and final re-finishing requirements where necessary.
| Supply Form | Required Order Data | Satin Surface Control | Processing / Delivery Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Satin Sheet | Grade, thickness, width, length, quantity, tolerance and visible side | Approved sample, Ra/Rz if required, visual tolerance and defect criteria | Confirm film, interleave, edge protection and packaging in the quotation |
| Satin Coil | Grade, thickness, width, quantity, coil requirements and downstream process | Uniformity, limit sample and measurable roughness target where specified | Confirm the finishing stage relative to slitting and other processing |
| Satin Strip | Grade, thickness, slit width, quantity and edge condition | Protect the visible face and maintain the agreed satin appearance | Width tolerance and surface handling should be written into the RFQ |
| Fabricated Part | Drawing, grade, dimensions, quantity and visible surface requirement | Define re-finishing and final visual inspection criteria | Use drawings or marked samples for appearance-critical parts |
Availability, dimensional limits, finishing route and processing capability must be confirmed against the actual quotation.
Finish Selection
Satin vs brushed vs 2B vs mirror stainless steel finish
Choose the finish according to gloss level, texture, visual consistency, fabrication route and final acceptance requirements rather than by name alone.
| Finish | Visual Character | Texture Direction | Selection Logic | Specification Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2B | Smooth mill-finish appearance | No deliberate decorative grain | When a standard mill finish is acceptable | Do not assume visual equivalence to satin |
| Brushed | Visible directional grain | Usually clearly directional | When a defined linear texture is desired | Brush direction should be controlled |
|
Satin
This Page |
Low-gloss, refined surface | Process-dependent; may be subtle or directional | When a softer decorative appearance is required | Use sample + Ra/Rz where measurable control matters |
| Mirror | High-reflectivity polished appearance | No visible satin texture in final mirror condition | When high reflectivity is a primary visual requirement | Requires different appearance acceptance criteria |
Processing Capability
Processing routes for satin stainless steel
The finishing sequence, visible side and protection method should be defined before cutting or fabrication so the approved satin surface is not unintentionally changed.
Satin Finishing
Define the approved finishing route, target appearance and reference sample before production.
Slitting / Cut to Length
Protect the visible surface and control handling during conversion to the requested dimensions.
Protective Film
Specify film where available and necessary for fabrication, transport or presentation quality.
Laser / Profile Cutting
Define visible face, film and edge-area requirements before cutting appearance-sensitive components.
Bending & Fabrication
Control surface contact, tooling and handling when the satin face remains visible after forming.
Finish Repair
Where local re-finishing is permitted, define the method and acceptance sample before production starts.
Surface Control
Roughness, production route, visual tolerance and maintenance
The table requires unique, reviewable finish data. Replace project-specific placeholders with approved production or test information before final publication.
Ra / Rz & Production Route
Publish measured Ra / Rz only when supported by an actual test record. Record the finishing route used to produce the approved satin appearance.
- Ra: specify by project or approved sample
- Rz: specify where required
- Measurement method: record with test data
- Production route: confirm with quotation
Reflectivity, Color & Defect Acceptance
Use controlled viewing conditions and an approved sample where visual uniformity matters.
- Approved / limit sample
- Reflectivity or color tolerance if applicable
- Scratch and handling-mark criteria
- Localized variation / stain acceptance
Grades, Film & Cleaning
Confirm compatible grade, form and protection route in the quotation. Clean the finished surface using methods that do not alter the approved appearance.
- Grade / form: confirm by RFQ
- Protective film: confirm by quotation
- Avoid damaging abrasive cleaning
- Test unfamiliar cleaners on a sample first
Application Guidance
Where is satin stainless steel finish used?
Satin finish is selected when a refined low-gloss stainless appearance is preferred and the surface can be protected through fabrication, transport and installation.
Architectural Interiors
Panels, trims and interior metalwork requiring a soft, refined stainless appearance.
Elevator & Wall Panels
Visible metal surfaces where gloss level and finish consistency should be controlled.
Kitchen & Hospitality
Decorative stainless components where appearance and cleaning requirements are specified together.
Appliance Panels
Visible housings and panels requiring a lower-gloss finish than highly polished surfaces.
Equipment Enclosures
Commercial or industrial enclosures where satin stainless remains the final visible surface.
Decorative Fabrication
Custom parts, trims and assemblies requiring a controlled satin visual character.
Standards & Equivalence
How to specify satin stainless steel finish without ambiguity
“Satin” can be used differently between suppliers and projects, so the purchase specification should identify the actual finish requirement, measurable criteria and approved appearance reference.
- Finish designation State “satin” together with the supplier, customer or project finish definition used for acceptance.
- Ra / Rz requirement Add measurable roughness limits when required, with the agreed test method and measurement direction.
- Visual approval Use an approved sample or finish-limit reference when gloss, texture, color or reflectivity consistency matters.
- Material specification Specify grade, dimensions, tolerances, inspection documentation and finish requirements separately.
Do not assume “satin”, “brushed” and a numbered polished finish are automatically equivalent.
Commercial finish terminology can vary. Final acceptance should follow the actual project specification, measurable requirements and approved sample.
The word “satin” does not by itself define chemistry, mechanical properties, thickness tolerance, flatness, Ra/Rz or complete visual defect criteria.
For critical appearance, agree the viewing condition, sample panel and inspection method before production.
