Sandblasted Stainless Steel Finish

Specifications, Supply & Technical Guide

Sandblasted stainless steel finish is a matte, textured surface produced by controlled abrasive blasting. For procurement, the blasting media, process route, surface roughness, visual limit, substrate grade, product form and post-blast protection should be agreed rather than specifying “sandblasted” as an appearance term alone.

Finish Definition

What is a sandblasted stainless steel finish?

A sandblasted stainless steel finish is created by projecting abrasive media onto the stainless surface under controlled conditions. The treatment changes the visual texture and produces a more diffuse, low-gloss appearance than a smooth mill finish.

The word “sandblasted” is a broad commercial term. The actual result depends on the chosen blasting media, media size, equipment settings, exposure time, nozzle distance, substrate condition and any post-blast cleaning or passivation route.

Where roughness or appearance matters, specify the required Ra / Rz, approved sample, reflectivity or color limit, defect criteria and cleanliness requirement in addition to the finish name.

Define these points before approving a sandblasted finish

  • Stainless steel grade and product form
  • Blasting media and process route
  • Ra / Rz requirement when measurable roughness is critical
  • Reflectivity / color tolerance where applicable
  • Approved sample and finish-limit reference
  • Post-blast cleaning, protection and packaging
  • Defect acceptance and maintenance guidance

Availability, dimensional limits, blasting media and processing capability must be confirmed against the actual quotation.

Finish Selection

Sandblasted vs bead blasted vs brushed vs satin stainless steel finish

Choose the finish according to texture, reflectivity, roughness, contamination control, fabrication sequence and final visual requirements rather than by finish name alone.

Finish Visual Character Process Character Selection Logic Specification Note
Sandblasted
This Page
Matte, diffuse and visibly textured Abrasive blasting with media / settings to be specified When a non-directional blasted texture is required Media, Ra/Rz and an approved sample should be defined
Bead Blasted Uniform matte appearance Blasting using bead-type media When the project specifically calls for a bead-blast route Do not assume all abrasive-blasted finishes use the same media
Brushed Visible directional grain Mechanical abrasive brushing When a linear directional texture is desired Brush direction should be shown on drawings
Satin Refined, low-gloss appearance Process depends on the project finish definition When a softer decorative surface is preferred Do not assume satin and sandblasted are equivalent

Processing Capability

Processing routes for sandblasted stainless steel

The sequence matters. Cutting, forming, welding, masking and final blasting should be planned together so the finished surface is not damaged or unintentionally reworked.

01

Surface Preparation

Define the incoming surface condition and cleanliness required before abrasive blasting.

02

Masking

Identify areas that must remain unblasted, protected or dimensionally unaffected.

03

Abrasive Blasting

Control media, process settings, coverage and the approved target appearance.

04

Cutting / Fabrication

Define whether fabrication occurs before or after the final blasting operation.

05

Post-Blast Cleaning

Remove residual media and contamination using a route appropriate to the stainless grade and project.

06

Protection & Packing

Protect the final surface from handling marks, contamination and transport damage.

Procurement note: only the blasting media, surface preparation, cleaning, masking and downstream processing explicitly listed in the final quotation should be treated as included in the supply scope.

Surface Control

Roughness, blasting route, visual tolerance and cleaning guidance

The content matrix requires unique, reviewable finish data. Do not invent Ra/Rz or process capability values; publish project or production values only when supported by actual evidence.

Ra / Rz & Blasting Route

Sandblasted finishes do not have one universal roughness value. Roughness depends strongly on media, media size, process settings and substrate condition.

  • Ra target: specify by project / approved sample
  • Rz target: specify where required
  • Media type / size: record in the process specification
  • Measurement method: agree before inspection

Reflectivity, Color & Defect Acceptance

Use controlled viewing and an approved sample when the final matte appearance is important.

  • Define acceptable matte / reflectivity variation
  • Use a limit sample where color variation matters
  • Set criteria for uneven blasting and missed areas
  • Set criteria for scratches, stains and handling marks

Grades, Protection & Cleaning

Confirm compatible grades and product forms in the RFQ. After blasting, protect the surface from contamination and use a cleaning route appropriate to the final application.

  • Grade / form: confirm by quotation
  • Residual blasting media should be removed as specified
  • Use clean handling and packaging for visible surfaces
  • Test unfamiliar cleaners on an approved sample first

Application Guidance

Where is sandblasted stainless steel finish used?

Sandblasted stainless steel is selected when a diffuse, textured metallic surface is preferred and the project can control blasting, cleaning, handling and final acceptance.

Architectural Metalwork

Panels, trims and custom metalwork where a matte non-directional texture is part of the design.

Decorative Fabrication

Custom parts and assemblies requiring a controlled blasted appearance rather than a brushed grain.

Equipment Enclosures

Visible enclosures and housings where low reflectivity and a textured surface are preferred.

Fixtures & Displays

Retail, hospitality and display components requiring a uniform matte metallic effect.

Custom Panels

Sheet or plate panels supplied with project-defined blasting media and appearance criteria.

Fabricated Components

Parts blasted after forming or welding so the final surface is applied at the end of fabrication.

Standards & Equivalence

How to specify a sandblasted stainless steel finish without ambiguity

“Sandblasted” should be treated as a process and appearance description unless the purchase specification also defines the media, measurable requirements and approved visual reference.

  • Finish designation State sandblasted / abrasive blasted together with the project finish definition and approved sample.
  • Blasting media Record the media type, size or other process detail needed to reproduce the approved finish.
  • Ra / Rz requirement Add measurable roughness limits when required, with the agreed measurement method and direction.
  • Material specification Specify stainless grade, dimensions, tolerances, documentation and finish requirements separately.

Do not assume all “sandblasted” stainless steel has the same texture or roughness.

Different abrasive media, particle sizes, equipment settings and substrate conditions can produce visibly different results.

The finish name does not by itself define chemistry, mechanical properties, dimensions, Ra/Rz, cleanliness or complete visual defect criteria.

For critical appearance, approve the media / process route, sample panel, viewing condition and inspection method before production.

Technical FAQ

Sandblasted stainless steel finish FAQ

What is a sandblasted stainless steel finish?
It is a matte, textured surface created by projecting abrasive media onto stainless steel under controlled conditions. The final result depends on the media, process settings and substrate condition.
Is sandblasted stainless steel the same as bead blasted stainless steel?
Not necessarily. Bead blasting describes a blasting route using bead-type media, while “sandblasted” is often used more broadly for abrasive-blasted finishes. State the actual media and approved sample in the specification.
What is the typical sandblasted surface roughness?
There is no single universal Ra or Rz value for all sandblasted stainless steel. Roughness changes with the media, particle size, process settings and substrate. Specify the required measurable range separately when critical.
Does sandblasting reduce surface reflectivity?
Abrasive blasting generally creates a more diffuse, matte visual appearance than a smooth mill or polished surface. Exact reflectivity should be controlled by an approved sample or project measurement when it is a critical requirement.
Can sandblasting be applied after fabrication?
Yes, depending on the part, grade and required finish. For many fabricated components, final blasting after cutting, forming or welding can help create one continuous surface appearance. The actual sequence should be confirmed in the quotation.
How should blasting media be specified?
Record the media type and any process detail required to reproduce the approved sample. Appearance-critical projects should not rely on the word “sandblasted” alone.
How should sandblasted stainless steel be cleaned?
Use a cleaning method suitable for the stainless grade and the approved blasted finish. Residual media and contamination should be removed as required, and unfamiliar cleaning methods should be tested on a sample first.
What information should be included in a sandblasted stainless steel RFQ?
Include grade, product form, dimensions, quantity, blasting media / process, Ra/Rz where applicable, approved sample or finish-limit requirement, masking, post-blast cleaning, protection, destination, due date and drawing or inspection requirements.
