PVD Colored Stainless Steel Finish

Specifications, Supply & Technical Guide

PVD colored stainless steel finish combines a stainless substrate with a decorative physical vapor deposition coating applied in a vacuum process. The coating changes the visible color while the underlying base finish—such as mirror, brushed, satin, patterned or another approved texture—continues to influence gloss, reflection and surface character. For procurement, specify the base finish, color target, coating route, sample standard, visible side and final fabrication sequence.

Finish Definition

What is a PVD colored stainless steel finish?

PVD colored stainless steel is stainless material that receives a decorative coating through a physical vapor deposition process carried out under vacuum.

The coating produces a metallic color effect without replacing the visual character of the base surface. A mirror substrate remains highly reflective, a brushed substrate retains directional grain, and a patterned substrate keeps its texture under the colored coating.

The term “PVD colored” therefore does not define one single color, one universal roughness value or one standard visual appearance. The buyer should define the target color, base finish, sample standard, acceptable color variation, coating side and fabrication / protection requirements.

Define these points before approving a PVD colored finish

  • Stainless steel grade and product form
  • Base surface finish before PVD coating
  • PVD color target and approved physical sample
  • Coating route / system and coated side
  • Ra / Rz where substrate roughness is critical
  • Color / reflectivity / gloss tolerance where applicable
  • Protective film, defect acceptance and cleaning guidance

Finish Evidence

Technical and application evidence for PVD color approval

The page keeps the total image count to three. For PVD colored stainless, evidence should prove both the actual color and the base-surface character under controlled viewing conditions.

Finish Selection

PVD colored vs painted vs electroplated vs uncoated stainless steel

PVD colored stainless is a vacuum-deposited decorative coating system. It should not be confused with paint, powder coating, electroplating or an uncoated mill / mechanical stainless finish.

Surface Route Visual Character Process Character Selection Logic Specification Note
PVD Colored
This Page
Metallic color while retaining base-finish character Vacuum physical vapor deposition When colored metallic stainless appearance is required Specify color + base finish + approved sample
Paint / Powder Coat Opaque colored coating Liquid or powder coating system When an opaque coating system is acceptable Base stainless texture may be less visually dominant
Electroplated / Electrochemical Coating Process-dependent metallic surface Electrochemical deposition / treatment When a specific electrochemical system is required Do not substitute automatically for PVD
Uncoated Brushed / Mirror Natural stainless color Mechanical / mill finish only When color coating is not required No PVD color layer present

Processing Route

Typical production route for PVD colored stainless steel

A repeatable PVD color requires control of the substrate, base finish, cleaning, vacuum coating process, color inspection and downstream handling.

01

Confirm Base Finish

Define grade, dimensions, visible side and substrate surface.

02

Clean & Prepare Surface

Remove contamination and prepare the approved substrate for vacuum coating.

03

PVD Vacuum Coating

Deposit the approved decorative coating under controlled process conditions.

04

Color / Surface Inspection

Compare color, gloss, tone and base-finish appearance to the sample.

05

Fabrication / Final Processing

Use the agreed sequence to minimize coating damage during cutting, bending or assembly.

06

Protect & Pack

Protect the colored surface from scratches, adhesive marks and handling damage.

Fabrication note: for appearance-critical parts, confirm whether cutting, forming, welding and edge finishing occur before or after PVD. Coating after major fabrication is often preferable where post-forming damage would otherwise affect the visible color surface.

Surface Control

Roughness, coating route, color tolerance and cleaning guidance

Do not publish invented Ra/Rz, coating-thickness or color tolerance values. Use actual production data, approved physical samples and agreed inspection methods for project-specific acceptance.

Ra / Rz & Production Route

The PVD layer is applied over an existing stainless surface, so the underlying base finish remains the main driver of visible texture and roughness character.

  • Ra target: specify for the substrate / finished surface if required
  • Rz target: specify where required
  • Base finish: record exactly for repeatability
  • PVD coating route: confirm supplier-specific approved system

Color, Reflectivity & Defect Acceptance

Color should be approved on the actual base finish because mirror, brushed and patterned substrates can change the perceived tone and reflectivity.

  • Use an approved physical color / finish sample
  • Define color / tone tolerance where measurable control is required
  • Define gloss / reflectivity where critical
  • Set scratch, pinhole, stain, color-shift and coating-uniformity criteria

Grades, Film & Cleaning

Confirm compatible grades and base finishes through the quotation. Protect the coated face and use cleaning methods that do not scratch or abrade the decorative coating.

  • Grade / form: confirm by quotation
  • Protective film: confirm adhesive / coating compatibility
  • Use soft, non-abrasive cleaning materials
  • Avoid uncontrolled polishing or abrasive rework on the coated face

Standards & Equivalence

How to specify PVD colored stainless steel without ambiguity

PVD colored stainless is generally a project-defined coated finish rather than one universal ASTM numbered finish. Specify the base stainless material and the decorative PVD coating requirements separately.

  • Base stainless material standard Specify grade, dimensions, tolerances and the incoming base finish before coating.
  • PVD coating specification Define color target, approved sample, coated side, process route and any project-specific coating performance requirements.
  • Ra / Rz / color requirement Add measurable roughness, color, gloss or reflectivity criteria only where required.
  • Visual approval Use controlled-light inspection and an approved sample / limit sample to control color, tone, surface character and visible defects.

Do not specify only a color name such as “gold” or “bronze”.

A color name does not define the exact coating system, base finish, reflectivity or acceptable batch variation.

The same PVD color family can look significantly different on mirror, brushed, satin or patterned stainless surfaces.

For visible work, approve a physical production sample, base finish, viewing condition and color / defect criteria before full production.

Technical FAQ

PVD colored stainless steel finish FAQ

What is a PVD colored stainless steel finish?
It is stainless steel with a decorative coating applied through physical vapor deposition in a vacuum process. The coating adds metallic color while the base stainless finish continues to influence texture and reflectivity.
Is PVD color the same as paint or powder coating?
No. PVD is a vacuum-deposition coating process. Paint and powder coating use different coating materials and application / curing routes and should not be treated as automatic substitutes.
Can PVD be applied over brushed or mirror stainless steel?
Yes, depending on the approved coating route. The base finish should always be specified because its grain or reflectivity remains visible through the final colored appearance.
What is the typical PVD colored stainless steel surface roughness?
There is no single universal Ra or Rz value. The surface texture is strongly influenced by the base stainless finish, so roughness should be specified separately when it is critical.
Does PVD colored stainless steel have one standard gold or bronze color?
No. Commercial color names can cover different tones and coating systems. Use an approved physical sample and project-specific color / finish acceptance limits.
Should stainless steel be fabricated before or after PVD coating?
The sequence depends on the part and coating capability. For visible parts, major cutting, forming and welding are often planned before final coating to reduce the risk of damaging the finished colored surface.
How should PVD colored stainless steel be cleaned?
Use soft, non-abrasive cleaning materials and a cleaner compatible with the approved coating system. Avoid abrasive pads, aggressive polishing or uncontrolled chemicals that can scratch or alter the colored surface.
What information should be included in a PVD colored stainless steel RFQ?
Include grade, product form, dimensions, quantity, base finish, target color, approved sample, coated side, Ra/Rz / gloss / color tolerance where required, protective film, fabrication sequence, destination, due date and inspection needs.
