Stainless Steel Decorative Surface
Patterned Stainless Steel Finish
Specifications, Supply & Technical Guide
Patterned stainless steel finish describes stainless sheet, panel or components with a controlled repeating or custom surface pattern. The pattern can be produced by rolling, embossing, etching or another approved texturing route, so the finish name alone does not define the manufacturing method, relief, roughness or reflectivity. For procurement, specify the actual process route, base finish, pattern, dimensions and acceptance criteria.

PATTERN
Illustrative visual reference only. Actual patterned stainless can vary by pattern geometry, pitch, base finish, relief / texture, rolling or etching route, sheet thickness and later fabrication. Use the final pattern drawing and an approved production sample for appearance-critical orders.
Finish Definition
What is a patterned stainless steel finish?
Patterned stainless steel is a broad category of stainless surfaces that carry a controlled repeating or custom design. The pattern may be visual only, physically textured, or both.
Depending on the product, the pattern can be produced by patterned rolling / embossing, chemical etching, mechanical texturing or another proprietary finishing method. This is why “patterned” should be treated as the required surface outcome, not as one fixed manufacturing route.
For a reproducible specification, define the base stainless finish, exact production route, pattern drawing or sample, pattern orientation, relief / depth where applicable, Ra / Rz, reflectivity / tone and acceptable visual variation.
Define these points before approving a patterned finish
- Stainless steel grade and base surface finish
- Pattern name / drawing, pitch, repeat and orientation
- Actual production route: roll, emboss, etch or other
- Relief / texture depth where dimensional control is required
- Ra / Rz range where measurable roughness is critical
- Reflectivity / color / tone tolerance where applicable
- Protective film, defect acceptance and cleaning guidance
Finish Evidence
Technical and application evidence for patterned finish approval
The page keeps the total image count to three. For patterned stainless steel, the evidence image should show the real pattern, repeat quality and measurable surface data where those values are controlled.

Technical evidence image
Use one combined image showing the actual pattern under controlled / side lighting, the approved sample and, where required, Ra / Rz, relief or pattern-depth measurement.

Application image
Use one real elevator panel, wall panel, equipment face, appliance component or decorative part showing the patterned surface in final use.
Supply Specification
Patterned stainless sheet, coil, panel and fabricated-part ordering matrix
Define material, base finish, dimensions, pattern, production route, orientation and protection together. The table below is an RFQ checklist, not live inventory.
Specify grade, thickness, dimensions, base finish, pattern and visible side.
Define pattern repeat, width, orientation and conversion requirements.
Provide drawings, visible pattern zones, flat zones and fabrication sequence.
| Supply Form | Required Order Data | Pattern Surface Control | Processing / Delivery Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Patterned Sheet | Grade, thickness, width, length, quantity, base finish and visible side | Pattern, orientation, actual route, Ra/Rz / relief if required and approved sample | Confirm film / interleave, edge protection and packaging |
| Patterned Coil | Grade, thickness, width, quantity and coil requirement | Control pattern repeat, orientation and surface consistency through the coil | Confirm slitting / CTL route and surface protection after conversion |
| Architectural Panel | Grade, panel dimensions, layout, quantity and orientation | Control pattern alignment, panel matching, tone and visual texture | Use approved limit samples for large visible installation areas |
| Fabricated Part | Drawing, grade, dimensions, quantity and pattern zones | Define flat / patterned areas, bend clearance and final pattern acceptance | Confirm whether patterning occurs before or after other forming operations |
Pattern availability, tooling / process route, dimensional range, relief capability and fabrication sequence must be confirmed in the actual quotation.
Finish Selection
Patterned vs embossed vs etched vs bead blasted stainless steel finish
Patterned stainless is the broad surface category. Embossed and etched finishes describe specific production routes, while bead blasting creates a more uniform full-surface texture.
| Finish | Visual / Physical Character | Process Character | Selection Logic | Specification Note |

Patterned
This Page |
Repeating or custom visible pattern | Process may be rolled, embossed, etched or proprietary | When the pattern outcome is the primary product requirement | Specify the actual process route separately |
| Embossed | 3D raised / recessed pattern relief | Mechanical patterned roll / die forming | When physical relief is required | One specific route within patterned stainless products |
| Etched | Selective graphic / tonal pattern | Mask / resist + controlled surface etching | When precise graphics or selective surface contrast are required | Pattern is chemically created rather than mechanically formed |
| Bead Blasted | Uniform diffuse matte | Spherical-media blasting | When full-surface low-glare texture is required | Usually not a repeating graphic / geometric pattern |
Processing Route
Typical control route for patterned stainless steel
Because patterned stainless can be made by more than one process, the first step is to lock the required appearance and then confirm the production route that will reproduce it.
Define Base Material
Specify grade, thickness, base finish and visible side.
Approve Pattern
Confirm pattern drawing, pitch, repeat and orientation.
Select Production Route
Confirm rolling, embossing, etching or other approved process.
Measure Critical Surface Data
Check Ra / Rz, relief, pattern depth or reflectivity where required.
Cut / Form / Fabricate
Maintain pattern alignment and visible orientation through later fabrication.
Inspect & Protect
Compare against the approved sample and protect the finished surface for delivery.
Surface Control
Roughness, production route, reflectivity and cleaning guidance
Do not publish invented Ra/Rz, relief or reflectivity values. Use actual production measurements and approved samples for project-specific numeric acceptance criteria.
Ra / Rz & Production Route
Roughness depends on both the base surface and the actual patterning process. A rolled embossed pattern, for example, should not automatically use the same roughness assumption as an etched pattern.
- Ra target: specify by relevant surface zone if required
- Rz target: specify where required
- Relief / pattern depth: define separately when applicable
- Production route: record for repeatability
Reflectivity, Color & Defect Acceptance
Pattern geometry can strongly change the way light is reflected, even when the same base finish is used.
- Define reflectivity / gloss where critical
- Define color / tone if coating or coloring is included
- Set pattern mismatch, incomplete repeat and local-defect criteria
- Use approved samples for visible panel matching
Grades, Film & Cleaning
Confirm compatible grade, thickness and form through the RFQ. Protection and cleaning should suit the actual pattern and its recessed / textured areas.
- Grade / form: confirm by quotation
- Protective film: confirm compatibility with the pattern
- Use cleaning methods suitable for the actual geometry
- Avoid abrasive rework that changes the approved pattern

Standards & Equivalence
How to specify patterned stainless steel without ambiguity
Patterned stainless is generally a project-defined decorative / textured product category rather than one universal numbered finish. Specify the base stainless material and patterning process separately.
- Base stainless material standard Specify grade, dimensions, tolerances and incoming base finish.
- Pattern specification Define pattern drawing / reference, pitch, repeat, orientation and visible side.
- Process specification Identify whether the pattern is rolled, embossed, etched or produced by another approved route.
- Ra / Rz / visual approval Add measurable surface limits and an approved sample where appearance or function requires them.
Do not use “patterned” as the complete manufacturing specification.
The word describes the visual product category, but it does not tell the supplier whether the surface must be embossed, rolled, etched or produced another way.
It also does not define base finish, relief depth, Ra/Rz, reflectivity, color or complete defect criteria.
For visible work, approve the pattern / process, production sample, orientation and dimensional acceptance before full production.
