Grade dossier

Nitronic 60 Stainless Steel for Galling and Wear Resistance

An austenitic stainless grade engineered for resistance to galling, fretting and adhesive wear in fasteners and moving components.

Open grade data

Identity before substitution

Define the grade, product and condition together

A familiar grade name is not a complete purchase specification. Product form, controlling standard, dimensions, condition, finish, certification and service environment determine whether the delivered material is suitable.

MicrostructureAustenitic
UNS identityS21800
Key alloyingAbout 4% silicon and 8% manganese
Common comparison304/316 when general corrosion matters more than galling

Composition control

ASTM A240/A240M flat-product chemistry

Limits are not heat analysis targets

The table summarizes grade limits commonly used for plate, sheet and strip. Pipe, tube, bar, forgings and cast products can be governed by different specifications. Always place the product standard and edition on the purchase order.

C0.10 max
Mn7.00-9.00
Si3.50-4.50
P0.060 max
S0.030 max
Cr16.00-18.00
Ni8.00-9.00
N0.08-0.18

Selection indicators

Densityabout 7.61 g/cm3
Primary benefitGalling, fretting and adhesive-wear resistance
Corrosion positionTypically between 304 and 316; verify service
Work hardeningHigh; machining requires rigid practice

Values depend on product form, thickness, test orientation, condition and governing edition. Use the mill test certificate and the purchase specification for acceptance, not a web table alone.

Selection boundary

Where Nitronic 60 belongs and where to escalate

Grade selection is an environmental decision, not a popularity contest. Review the complete medium, temperature, geometry, fabrication, cleaning and inspection requirements.

Good reasons to evaluate it

01

Fasteners and threaded assemblies

02

Pins, bushings and wear rails

03

Pump components and valve trim

04

Roller-bearing and sliding-contact parts

Reasons to stop and review

01

Assuming anti-galling means dry running is always safe

02

Using the grade as a universal corrosion upgrade

03

Ordering without bar condition and property range

04

Applying sheet values to finished fasteners

Fabrication route

Protect properties through cutting, forming and welding

01

Specify S21800, form, condition and final hardness.

02

Use rigid machining setups and positive cutting action.

03

Evaluate mating material, surface finish and lubricant together.

04

Qualify welding where wear surfaces are affected.

Supply definition

Product form changes the applicable requirements

Do not send an RFQ that names only the grade. State form, governing standard, dimensions, tolerances, finish, edge or end condition, quantity, certification and inspection.

Bar and shapes to ASTM A276/A479
Fastener stock under applicable specifications
Pins, bushings and machined wear parts
Special plate or weld products only when explicitly available
Certificate checkpoint

Request heat identity, chemical analysis, mechanical results and compliance to the exact product specification. Add PMI, corrosion testing or supplementary examination only when the application requires it.

Galling-resistant componentsReserved for wear, sliding or anti-galling part context
Valve & fastener serviceReserved for threaded, valve or high-contact components
Material conditionReserved for surface, hardness or certificate verification

Procurement FAQ

Questions to close before placing the order

Is Nitronic 60 stainless steel magnetic?

Magnetic response depends on microstructure and delivered condition.

Can Nitronic 60 replace another grade?

Only after checking the governing standard, composition, mechanical properties, corrosion exposure, fabrication route and certification. A commercial name is not a substitution approval.

Does the table apply to every product form?

Not automatically. The values shown use flat-product requirements as a reference. Other forms can use different product standards, dimensions and tests.

What should a Nitronic 60 RFQ include?

Product form, standard and edition, UNS or EN designation, dimensions, tolerances, finish, quantity, service, fabrication, certificate and inspection requirements.
