Grade dossier

Nitronic 50 Stainless Steel for High Strength and Corrosion Resistance

A nitrogen-strengthened austenitic stainless grade combining high annealed strength, useful corrosion resistance and low-temperature toughness.

Identity before substitution

Define the grade, product and condition together

A familiar grade name is not a complete purchase specification. Product form, controlling standard, dimensions, condition, finish, certification and service environment determine whether the delivered material is suitable.

MicrostructureAustenitic
UNS identityS20910 / XM-19
Critical distinctionNITRONIC is a trademark; specify UNS and condition
Common comparison316L or duplex depending strength, corrosion and fabrication

Composition control

ASTM A240/A240M flat-product chemistry

Limits are not heat analysis targets

The table summarizes grade limits commonly used for plate, sheet and strip. Pipe, tube, bar, forgings and cast products can be governed by different specifications. Always place the product standard and edition on the purchase order.

Specified annealed flat-product values

Annealed tensile strength690 MPa min reference
Annealed 0.2% yield380 MPa min reference

Selection indicators

Densityabout 7.9 g/cm3
Strength mechanismNitrogen solid-solution strengthening
Magnetic responseGenerally low annealed; may change with processing
ToughnessUseful subzero toughness in appropriate conditions

Values depend on product form, thickness, test orientation, condition and governing edition. Use the mill test certificate and the purchase specification for acceptance, not a web table alone.

Selection boundary

Where Nitronic 50 belongs and where to escalate

Grade selection is an environmental decision, not a popularity contest. Review the complete medium, temperature, geometry, fabrication, cleaning and inspection requirements.

Good reasons to evaluate it

01

Marine shafts and pump components after corrosion review

02

Fasteners and valve components

03

High-strength cryogenic structures under approved rules

04

Parts requiring S20910 chemistry and condition

Reasons to stop and review

01

Ordering by trade name without condition

02

Using high-strength bar values for annealed sheet

03

Assuming equivalence to duplex stainless

04

Selecting for warm chloride crevices without data

Fabrication route

Protect properties through cutting, forming and welding

01

Specify UNS S20910, condition and product standard.

02

Account for high work hardening in machining and forming.

03

Qualify welding for strength and corrosion retention.

04

State magnetic, toughness and NDE requirements when critical.

Supply definition

Product form changes the applicable requirements

Do not send an RFQ that names only the grade. State form, governing standard, dimensions, tolerances, finish, edge or end condition, quantity, certification and inspection.

Bar and shapes under ASTM A276/A479
Plate, sheet and strip under applicable specifications
Forgings and fasteners
Shafts, valve trim and pump components
Certificate checkpoint

Request heat identity, chemical analysis, mechanical results and compliance to the exact product specification. Add PMI, corrosion testing or supplementary examination only when the application requires it.

High-strength corrosion serviceReserved for marine, valve or process equipment context
Threaded & mechanical componentsReserved for fasteners, shafts or high-contact parts
Material conditionReserved for surface, heat or certificate verification

Procurement FAQ

Questions to close before placing the order

Is Nitronic 50 stainless steel magnetic?

Magnetic response depends on microstructure and delivered condition.

Can Nitronic 50 replace another grade?

Only after checking the governing standard, composition, mechanical properties, corrosion exposure, fabrication route and certification. A commercial name is not a substitution approval.

Does the table apply to every product form?

No. Annealed, hot-rolled and high-strength S20910 conditions have different minimum properties. The RFQ must state condition.

What should a Nitronic 50 RFQ include?

Product form, standard and edition, UNS or EN designation, dimensions, tolerances, finish, quantity, service, fabrication, certificate and inspection requirements.
