CERTIFICATES / TRACEABILITY

Read the certificate with the material and the order beside it.

A mill test certificate helps connect supplied stainless steel to the agreed grade, standard, heat or batch reference and reported test results. It must be reviewed against the purchase requirement—not in isolation.

01 / CERTIFICATE ROLE

What an MTC should help you verify.

The certificate type, format and reported fields depend on the applicable product standard, product form, order terms and issuing mill or supplier. State the required edition before purchase.

IDENTITY

Material reference

Check whether heat, cast, batch or lot information connects the certificate to the delivered material and related order documents.

CONFORMITY

Grade and standard

Compare the listed grade, designation, material condition and invoked standard with the purchase specification.

EVIDENCE

Reported results

Review chemical, mechanical, dimensional or other stated results against the acceptance basis that applies to the order.

02 / REVIEW POINTS

Review the MTC against these order questions.

Build an RFQ  →
Material identityDoes the heat, cast, batch or lot reference connect the certificate to the material, tags and packing records received?
Grade and standardDo designation, grade, material condition and standard edition match the purchase order and governing specification?
Chemical resultsAre reported elements, units and limits presented against the applicable acceptance basis for the delivered product form?
Mechanical resultsAre the stated tests, condition, direction and reported values appropriate for what was ordered?
Product and dimensionsDoes the certificate or its linked inspection record identify the ordered form, size or applicable range?

03 / BEFORE PURCHASE

Make the required document part of the request.

Do not assume a generic certificate will meet the project requirement. Include document and traceability needs in the RFQ so they can be reviewed before an offer or order is confirmed.

Build a certificate-aware RFQ  →
  • 01State the governing product specification and required standard edition.
  • 02Identify the certificate type, language or purchaser-specific document requirement where applicable.
  • 03Specify any heat, lot, package or item marking and transfer-record requirement.
  • 04Confirm whether additional testing, witnessing or release documents are needed before dispatch.

04 / TRACEABILITY CHAIN

The document is useful only when the link stays intact.

Certificate review works best when the order, material marking, packing record, inspection evidence and certificate can be reconciled. That connection can be weakened during cutting, mixing, relabeling or transfer between operations.
