EN Stainless Steel Standards

EN stainless steel standards work as a specification stack: one document may define grade composition, another the product delivery condition, and another the inspection document.

Decision summary

Separate grade identity from product delivery requirements

An EN steel number such as 1.4307 identifies a grade, but the order still needs the correct standard for sheet, bar, pressure plate or tube.

Grade list and composition

EN 10088-1 lists stainless steels and composition data; the current BSI adoption is 2023.

General flat products

EN 10088-2 covers sheet, plate and strip of corrosion-resistant stainless steels for general purposes.

General long products

EN 10088-3 covers semi-finished products, bars, rods, wire, sections and bright products for general purposes.

Pressure flat products

EN 10028-7 covers stainless flat products for pressure purposes.

Pressure tubes

EN 10216-5 covers seamless stainless pressure tubes; EN 10217-7 covers welded stainless pressure tubes.

Inspection documents

EN 10204 defines metallic-product inspection document types; the purchase order must state the required type.

A national prefix such as BS EN or DIN EN identifies an adoption. Confirm language, amendments and regulatory references applicable to the contract.

Working method

Write a controlled EN purchase designation

The order must connect the grade designation to a product standard, delivery condition and inspection evidence.

State quantity and product form

Define sheet, plate, strip, bar, rod, wire, section, seamless tube or welded tube.

Name the product standard

Use the EN document whose scope matches general service, pressure service and manufacturing route.

Identify grade and condition

State steel name and number, heat treatment or delivery condition, dimensions, tolerances and finish.

Specify inspection evidence

Name EN 10204 document type, test category, sampling, NDT, witness and marking requirements.

Limits and escalation

Do not treat EN and ASTM labels as automatic equivalents

Grade ranges can differ

A common AISI or ASTM type may overlap more than one EN grade, so compare the actual standards.

Product scope changes requirements

EN 10088-1 is a grade list; delivery properties come from the applicable product standard.

National adoption matters

BS EN, DIN EN and other adoptions can have publication dates, language and national forewords.

A certificate type is not a product specification

EN 10204 defines document types but does not select grade, dimensions or acceptance criteria.

Interactive planning aid

Find the EN standard to review first

Choose the product or document need. Confirm the final specification with the designer, purchaser and current national standard.

Frequently asked questions

EN stainless steel standards FAQ

It is the first part of the EN 10088 series and lists stainless steels and chemical compositions. Product delivery requirements come from the appropriate later part or another product standard.
Part 2 covers general-purpose corrosion-resistant flat products. Part 3 covers semi-finished and long products such as bars, rods, wire, sections and bright products.
It is an inspection certificate type based on specific inspection and validated as defined by EN 10204. The order must still name the product standard and required test results.
No. Also state product standard, form, condition, dimensions, finish, inspection document and other ordering information.

EN standards context

Use the EN designation together with the applicable product standard.

A European material number or grade name does not define supply on its own. Confirm the linked product standard, delivery condition, dimensions and inspection clauses.
