Custom 465 Stainless Steel for Very High Strength and Damage Tolerance

A premium high-strength precipitation-hardening grade developed for aerospace structures requiring strength, fracture toughness and corrosion resistance.

Identity before substitution

Define the grade, product and condition together

A familiar grade name is not a complete purchase specification. Product form, controlling standard, dimensions, condition, finish, certification and service environment determine whether the delivered material is suitable.

MicrostructureMartensitic precipitation hardening
UNS identityS46500
Trademark noteCustom 465 is a Carpenter Technology trademark
Common comparison13-8 Mo, 15-5 PH and Custom 455

Composition control

ASTM A240/A240M flat-product chemistry

Limits are not heat analysis targets

The table summarizes grade limits commonly used for plate, sheet and strip. Pipe, tube, bar, forgings and cast products can be governed by different specifications. Always place the product standard and edition on the purchase order.

Properties with context

Minimums, typical indicators and delivered condition

Specified annealed flat-product values

Solution-treated conditionStarting state; final properties require aging
H950Can exceed 1724 MPa / 250 ksi tensile; use certified minimums
H1000Lower strength with increased toughness
Cold-work plus agingMay increase strength; requires separate qualification

Selection indicators

Densityabout 7.8 g/cm3
Strengthamong the highest commercial PH stainless grades
Damage toleranceDesigned for strong toughness-strength combinations
Procurement ruleMelt practice, condition and inspection are integral

Values depend on product form, thickness, test orientation, condition and governing edition. Use the mill test certificate and the purchase specification for acceptance, not a web table alone.

Selection boundary

Where Custom 465 belongs and where to escalate

Grade selection is an environmental decision, not a popularity contest. Review the complete medium, temperature, geometry, fabrication, cleaning and inspection requirements.

Good reasons to evaluate it

01

Aircraft torque tubes, braces and structural fittings

02

Landing-gear and actuation components

03

High-strength shafts and pressure hardware

04

Corrosion-resistant replacement for plated alloy steel after qualification

Reasons to stop and review

01

Using 250 ksi as a universal minimum

02

Ordering without AMS/ASTM condition and melt route

03

Welding or heat treating outside the qualified route

04

Assuming equivalence to Custom 455 or 13-8 Mo

Fabrication route

Protect properties through cutting, forming and welding

01

Specify S46500, AMS/ASTM standard and melt route.

02

Plan machining and joining before final aging.

03

Control surface contamination and heat-treatment atmosphere.

04

Verify tensile, hardness, fracture-toughness and NDE requirements.

Supply definition

Product form changes the applicable requirements

Do not send an RFQ that names only the grade. State form, governing standard, dimensions, tolerances, finish, edge or end condition, quantity, certification and inspection.

Bar and forgings to AMS 5936
ASTM A564/A564M and A693 products where applicable
Premium-remelt aerospace stock
Machined structural and medical components
Certificate checkpoint

Request heat identity, chemical analysis, mechanical results and compliance to the exact product specification. Add PMI, corrosion testing or supplementary examination only when the application requires it.

High-strength componentsReserved for precipitation-hardened precision parts
Damage-tolerance applicationsReserved for aerospace, tooling or critical component service
Condition verificationReserved for heat-treatment, hardness or certificate evidence

Procurement FAQ

Questions to close before placing the order

Is Custom 465 stainless steel magnetic?

Magnetic response depends on microstructure and delivered condition.

Can Custom 465 replace another grade?

Only after checking the governing standard, composition, mechanical properties, corrosion exposure, fabrication route and certification. A commercial name is not a substitution approval.

Does the table apply to every product form?

No. Custom 465 is S46500 and its properties depend on the full solution treatment, aging condition, product form and qualification route.

What should a Custom 465 RFQ include?

Product form, standard and edition, UNS or EN designation, dimensions, tolerances, finish, quantity, service, fabrication, certificate and inspection requirements.
