Stainless Steel Mill Finish
Bright Annealed Stainless Steel Finish
Specifications, Supply & Technical Guide
Bright annealed stainless steel finish is a smooth, bright and reflective mill surface produced by annealing cold-rolled stainless steel in a controlled atmosphere that minimizes surface oxidation. The result is cleaner and more reflective than standard 2B, while remaining a mill-produced finish rather than a mechanically polished mirror surface.

Finish Definition
What is a bright annealed stainless steel finish?
Bright annealed stainless steel is produced from cold-rolled material that is annealed in a controlled atmosphere designed to minimize oxidation and preserve a smooth, bright surface.
Because the annealing stage does not rely on a later abrasive polishing operation, BA keeps the character of a mill-produced surface while achieving higher brightness and reflectivity than common 2B material.
The BA designation alone does not define one universal Ra / Rz, gloss, reflectivity or color tolerance. For appearance-critical procurement, combine the finish designation with measurable limits, controlled-light inspection and an approved production sample.
Define these points before approving a bright annealed finish
- Stainless steel grade and product form
- Bright annealed / 2R finish designation
- Cold-rolling and controlled-atmosphere annealing route
- Ra / Rz range where measurable roughness is critical
- Reflectivity / gloss / color tolerance where applicable
- Approved sample and defect acceptance criteria
- Protective film, handling and cleaning requirements
Finish Evidence
Technical and application evidence for bright annealed finish approval
The page keeps the image count low: one technical evidence image and one application image in addition to the hero visual. Use verified production evidence.

Technical evidence image
Use one combined image showing the actual BA surface under controlled light, the sample panel and, where applicable, reflectivity or Ra / Rz measurement.

Application image
Use one real appliance, decorative panel or fabricated component photo where the bright annealed surface is visible in the final supplied condition.
Supply Specification

| Supply Form | Required Order Data | BA Surface Control | Processing / Delivery Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| BA Sheet | Grade, thickness, width, length, quantity, tolerance and visible side | BA / 2R designation; add reflectivity, Ra/Rz or sample limits if required | Confirm film, interleave, edge protection and packaging |
| BA Coil | Grade, thickness, width, quantity and coil requirement | Define bright surface acceptance before and after slitting / CTL | Confirm coil handling, surface protection and conversion route |
| BA Strip | Grade, thickness, slit width, quantity and edge condition | Maintain agreed bright appearance and surface quality after slitting | Specify width tolerance, edge and protection requirements |

Availability, grade range, dimensions and actual BA appearance must be confirmed in the quotation.
Finish Selection
Bright annealed vs 2B vs No. 7 vs No. 8 stainless steel finish
BA is a bright mill finish. No. 7 and No. 8 rely on mechanical polishing / buffing, while 2B is a smoother but generally less reflective cold-rolled mill finish.
| Finish | Visual Character | Process Character | Selection Logic | Specification Note |

Bright, smooth, reflective mill surface | Cold rolled + controlled-atmosphere bright annealing | When a bright mill-produced surface is required | No mechanical mirror polishing required |
| 2B | Smooth, moderately reflective | Cold rolled, heat treated, pickled and light skin passed | General-purpose mill finish | Usually less bright than BA |
| No. 7 | High luster with fine polishing lines visible | Fine grinding + buffing | When highly reflective mechanically polished appearance is required | Production route differs fundamentally from BA |
| No. 8 | Very high reflectivity, mirror-like | Progressively finer polishing + buffing | When mirror-type appearance is the target | Do not treat BA as automatic No. 8 equivalent |
Processing Route
Typical production and processing route for bright annealed stainless steel
The defining surface is produced at the mill. Downstream slitting, cutting and fabrication should preserve the bright face when it remains visible in the final component.
Cold Rolling
Prepare the strip / sheet surface for the required bright annealed mill route.
Controlled-Atmosphere Annealing
Anneal in a controlled atmosphere to minimize oxidation and preserve brightness.
Surface Inspection
Check brightness, tone, surface cleanliness and visual uniformity.
Slitting / Cut to Length
Convert coil or sheet while protecting the visible bright surface.
Fabrication
Define bending, cutting and handling requirements to avoid visible damage.
Protect & Pack
Use the specified film, interleave or packaging to preserve the bright face.
Surface Control
Roughness, annealing route, reflectivity and cleaning guidance
Do not publish invented Ra/Rz or reflectivity values. Use real mill data, measurements and approved samples for any project-specific numeric acceptance criteria.
Ra / Rz & Production Route
BA is produced by cold rolling and bright annealing, but the finish designation does not create one universal roughness value for every mill, alloy and thickness.
- Ra target: specify when required
- Rz target: specify when required
- Annealing route: controlled-atmosphere bright anneal
- Measurement method: agree before inspection
Reflectivity, Color & Defect Acceptance
Brightness and reflectivity are key BA characteristics, so appearance-sensitive orders should use controlled-light comparison and agreed limit samples.
- Define reflectivity / gloss where critical
- Define acceptable tone / color variation where applicable
- Set scratch, haze, stain and handling-mark criteria
- Use approved limit samples for visible panels
Grades, Film & Cleaning
Confirm compatible grades, thicknesses and forms through the quotation. Protect the bright face from abrasion, fingerprints and fabrication damage.
- Grade / form: confirm by quotation
- Protective film / interleave: specify where compatible
- Use non-abrasive cleaners on visible BA surfaces
- Avoid uncontrolled abrasive rework after final inspection

Standards & Equivalence
How bright annealed stainless steel is specified
Use the exact finish designation required by the governing standard and combine it with grade, dimensions, tolerances, surface acceptance and documentation requirements.
- EN 10088-2 — 2R 2R is the European bright-annealed cold-rolled finish designation and is associated with a smooth, bright, reflective surface.
- Bright Annealed / BA terminology BA is widely used commercially to describe stainless material bright annealed in a controlled atmosphere.
- Ra / Rz and reflectivity Add measurable roughness, gloss or reflectivity criteria only when required by the project.
- Visual approval Use controlled-light inspection and an approved sample where brightness and panel matching matter.
Do not treat BA as a mechanically polished mirror finish.
Bright annealed stainless is reflective because of its cold-rolled surface and controlled-atmosphere annealing route, not because it has been polished to No. 7 or No. 8.
The finish designation does not define chemistry, mechanical properties, dimensions, one universal Ra/Rz or complete appearance tolerance.
For critical visible work, define the required standard, reflectivity / visual limits and approved sample before ordering.
