Grade dossier

409L Stainless Steel for Welded Exhaust and Thermal Components

A low-carbon, stabilized ferritic 11% chromium grade commonly used for welded exhaust and thermal components where cost, oxidation behavior and formability must be balanced.

Identity before substitution

Define the grade, product and condition together

A familiar grade name is not a complete purchase specification. Product form, controlling standard, dimensions, condition, finish, certification and service environment determine whether the delivered material is suitable.

MicrostructureFerritic
Common identityEN 1.4512; UNS S40903 may apply by product
Critical distinction“409L” naming varies by market and specification
Common comparison409, 439 or 441 depending corrosion and temperature

Composition control

ASTM A240/A240M flat-product chemistry

Limits are not heat analysis targets

The table summarizes grade limits commonly used for plate, sheet and strip. Pipe, tube, bar, forgings and cast products can be governed by different specifications. Always place the product standard and edition on the purchase order.

Selection indicators

Densityabout 7.7 g/cm3
Thermal expansionLower than austenitic stainless steels
Magnetic responseMagnetic
Corrosion positionModerate; cosmetic surface rust can occur

Values depend on product form, thickness, test orientation, condition and governing edition. Use the mill test certificate and the purchase specification for acceptance, not a web table alone.

Selection boundary

Where 409L belongs and where to escalate

Grade selection is an environmental decision, not a popularity contest. Review the complete medium, temperature, geometry, fabrication, cleaning and inspection requirements.

Good reasons to evaluate it

01

Automotive exhaust systems

02

Mufflers, catalytic-converter shells and tubing

03

Heat exchangers and thermal shields

04

Welded components needing a stabilized ferritic route

Reasons to stop and review

01

Ordering “409L” without standard or UNS

02

Decorative exposure requiring a rust-free appearance

03

Warm chloride or coastal service without testing

04

Confusing S40903, S40900 and EN 1.4512

Fabrication route

Protect properties through cutting, forming and welding

01

Specify the exact standard, UNS/EN identity and coating condition.

02

Control welding heat input and ferritic grain growth.

03

Design drainage and remove carbon-steel contamination.

04

Validate forming direction, springback and weld-zone ductility.

Supply definition

Product form changes the applicable requirements

Do not send an RFQ that names only the grade. State form, governing standard, dimensions, tolerances, finish, edge or end condition, quantity, certification and inspection.

Cold-rolled sheet, strip and coil
Hot-rolled sheet and coil
Welded tube and exhaust-system components
Stamped shells and thermal shields
Certificate checkpoint

Request heat identity, chemical analysis, mechanical results and compliance to the exact product specification. Add PMI, corrosion testing or supplementary examination only when the application requires it.

Procurement FAQ

Questions to close before placing the order

Is 409L stainless steel magnetic?

Magnetic response depends on microstructure and delivered condition.

Can 409L replace another grade?

Only after checking the governing standard, composition, mechanical properties, corrosion exposure, fabrication route and certification. A commercial name is not a substitution approval.

Does the table apply to every product form?

No. “409L” can be used loosely. The purchase order should name EN 1.4512 or the applicable UNS and product standard.

What should a 409L RFQ include?

Product form, standard and edition, UNS or EN designation, dimensions, tolerances, finish, quantity, service, fabrication, certificate and inspection requirements.
