Grade dossier

301 Stainless Steel for High-Strength Formed Parts

A leaner-nickel austenitic grade valued for rapid work hardening, high cold-worked strength and spring properties rather than for maximum corrosion margin.

Identity before substitution

Define the grade, product and condition together

A familiar grade name is not a complete purchase specification. Product form, controlling standard, dimensions, condition, finish, certification and service environment determine whether the delivered material is suitable.

MicrostructureAustenitic; strain-induced martensite forms during cold work
Buying distinctionTemper is as important as grade
Magnetic responseCan rise strongly with cold work
Common comparison304 for lower work hardening and broader general use

Composition control

ASTM A240/A240M flat-product chemistry

Limits are not heat analysis targets

The table summarizes grade limits commonly used for plate, sheet and strip. Pipe, tube, bar, forgings and cast products can be governed by different specifications. Always place the product standard and edition on the purchase order.

C0.15 max
Mn2.00 max
Si1.00 max
P0.045 max
S0.030 max
Cr16.00-18.00
Ni6.00-8.00

Selection indicators

Densityabout 8.0 g/cm3
Work hardeningVery high
Temper routeAnnealed through full hard under ASTM A666
Heat treatmentStrength comes mainly from cold work

Values depend on product form, thickness, test orientation, condition and governing edition. Use the mill test certificate and the purchase specification for acceptance, not a web table alone.

Selection boundary

Where 301 belongs and where to escalate

Grade selection is an environmental decision, not a popularity contest. Review the complete medium, temperature, geometry, fabrication, cleaning and inspection requirements.

Good reasons to evaluate it

01

Springs, clips and retainers

02

High-strength formed strip

03

Vehicle and structural components using cold-worked strength

04

Parts where elastic recovery is engineered into tooling

Reasons to stop and review

01

RFQs without a temper or strength level

02

Substitution for 304 in corrosive service without review

03

Complex forming without springback trials

04

Welding after heavy cold work without procedure review

Fabrication route

Protect properties through cutting, forming and welding

01

Specify temper, rolling direction and mechanical-property range.

02

Plan tooling for strong work hardening and springback.

03

Cold work increases strength, hardness and magnetic response while reducing ductility.

04

Validate joining after the final forming route, not only in annealed material.

Supply definition

Product form changes the applicable requirements

Do not send an RFQ that names only the grade. State form, governing standard, dimensions, tolerances, finish, edge or end condition, quantity, certification and inspection.

Annealed plate, sheet and strip to ASTM A240/A240M
Cold-worked sheet and strip to ASTM A666
Precision strip and spring stock
Formed clips, springs and structural parts
Certificate checkpoint

Request heat identity, chemical analysis, mechanical results and compliance to the exact product specification. Add PMI, corrosion testing or supplementary examination only when the application requires it.

High-strength stripReserved for strip, wire or tempered-material context
Formed componentsReserved for springs, clips or formed stainless parts
Material conditionReserved for temper, finish or supplied-condition evidence

Procurement FAQ

Questions to close before placing the order

Is 301 stainless steel magnetic?

Can rise strongly with cold work

Can 301 replace another grade?

Only after checking the governing standard, composition, mechanical properties, corrosion exposure, fabrication route and certification. A commercial name is not a substitution approval.

Does the table apply to every product form?

Not automatically. The values shown use flat-product requirements as a reference. Other forms can use different product standards, dimensions and tests.

What should a 301 RFQ include?

Product form, standard and edition, UNS or EN designation, dimensions, tolerances, finish, quantity, service, fabrication, certificate and inspection requirements.
