2D Stainless Steel Finish

Specifications, Supply & Technical Guide

2D stainless steel finish is a dull, low-reflectivity cold-rolled mill finish used where a smooth but non-decorative surface is acceptable or where further forming, fabrication or finishing is planned. Buyers should specify the material grade, form, dimensions, 2D designation and any measurable Ra/Rz or visual acceptance requirement together.

Finish Definition

What is a 2D stainless steel finish?

A 2D stainless steel finish is a cold-rolled flat-product surface produced after heat treatment and pickling or descaling. The resulting surface is generally smooth but duller and less reflective than 2B.

Unlike 2B, the 2D route does not rely on the final light skin-pass step used to create the smoother, more reflective 2B appearance. This makes 2D a useful choice where a low-reflectivity mill finish is acceptable or where subsequent forming or finishing is planned.

The finish designation describes the surface route and general appearance. It does not by itself define the stainless grade, dimensional tolerance, mechanical properties, exact Ra/Rz, color or complete defect criteria.

Specify more than “2D” when surface control matters

  • Stainless steel grade or applicable product standard
  • Sheet, coil or strip dimensions and tolerances
  • Required finish designation: 2D
  • Ra / Rz range when measurable roughness is critical
  • Reflectivity / color tolerance where applicable
  • Approved sample or finish-limit reference if appearance matters
  • Protective film, defect acceptance and cleaning requirement

Finish Selection

2D vs 2B vs BA / 2R vs No. 4 stainless steel finish

Choose the finish according to reflectivity, fabrication route, final appearance and measurable surface requirements rather than selecting only by the finish name.

Dull, low-reflectivity mill appearance Cold rolled, heat treated and pickled / descaled When a non-decorative mill surface is acceptable or further forming / finishing is planned Add Ra/Rz or sample limits if surface control is critical
2B Smoother and more reflective than 2D Includes a final light cold-roll / skin-pass step When a smoother general-purpose mill finish is preferred Do not assume exact gloss or Ra from the designation alone
BA / 2R Bright, smoother and more reflective Bright-annealed route When higher brightness is needed Appearance acceptance may require a sample
No. 4 Directional brushed / polished appearance Mechanical abrasive finishing When a decorative directional finish is desired Grain direction and visual criteria should be specified

Processing Capability

Processing routes for 2D stainless steel

Processing should be selected according to material grade, thickness and the required final surface. Define whether the original 2D condition must be preserved or whether it is an intermediate surface for later operations.

01

Slitting

Specify slit width, edge condition, tolerance and handling requirements.

02

Cut to Length

Prepare sheet or blanks to requested dimensions, flatness and tolerance requirements.

03

Protective Film

Specify film where the original 2D surface must remain protected through downstream work.

04

Laser / Profile Cutting

Provide drawings, tolerances and visible-face requirements before cutting.

05

Forming & Fabrication

Define the final visible surface and whether further finishing follows forming.

06

Further Finishing

2D can be used as a practical base condition for later finishing where the project requires it.

Procurement note: only processing operations explicitly listed in the final quotation should be treated as included in the supply scope.

Surface Control

Roughness, production route, visual tolerance and maintenance

The content matrix requires unique, reviewable finish data. Do not publish invented Ra/Rz or availability values; replace project-specific placeholders only with approved test or supply data.

Ra / Rz & Production Route

The 2D designation does not create one universal surface roughness acceptance limit. State measurable values separately when the application needs tighter control.

  • Ra target: specify when required
  • Rz target: specify when required
  • Measurement method: agree before inspection
  • Route: cold rolled + heat treated + pickled / descaled

Reflectivity, Color & Defect Acceptance

2D is generally a dull, low-reflectivity finish, but exact appearance can vary by mill route, grade and processing.

  • Use controlled-light comparison where appearance matters
  • Approve a sample / limit sample if necessary
  • Define scratch, stain and handling-mark criteria
  • Do not assume batch-to-batch visual identity

Grades, Film & Cleaning

Confirm compatible grades and forms through the RFQ. Where the surface remains visible, define protection, handling and cleaning requirements.

  • Grade / form: confirm by quotation
  • Protective film: specify when needed
  • Use cleaning methods suitable for the stainless grade
  • Avoid uncontrolled abrasive damage to visible surfaces

Application Guidance

Where is 2D stainless steel finish used?

2D is useful where a dull mill surface is acceptable, where high reflectivity is unnecessary, or where the material will undergo further forming, fabrication or finishing.

Formed Components

Parts where the mill finish is functional rather than a final decorative feature and forming follows supply.

Industrial Fabrication

General stainless fabrication where a low-reflectivity mill surface is suitable for the service requirement.

Further-Finished Products

Components where the supplied 2D surface will later receive another finishing or processing operation.

Equipment Components

Internal or non-decorative equipment surfaces where the grade and engineering requirements take priority.

Transport & Handling Parts

Fabricated components where a bright decorative surface is not required and later processing may occur.

Project-Specific Flat Products

Sheet, coil or strip supplied to a drawing or process route that specifically calls for a 2D condition.

Standards & Equivalence

How 2D finish is specified in ASTM and EN standards

The finish designation should be combined with the correct material grade, product standard, dimensions, tolerances, surface acceptance and documentation requirements.

  • ASTM A480 / A480M — No. 2D A dull cold-rolled finish associated with heat treatment and pickling / descaling, without the brighter final light cold-roll appearance characteristic of 2B.
  • EN 10088-2 — 2D Cold rolled, heat treated and pickled; a smooth, dull finish used as a defined flat-product surface condition.
  • Surface roughness Ra and/or Rz should be added as separate measurable acceptance criteria when the project needs tighter surface control than the finish designation alone provides.
  • Visual equivalence Do not assume two mills or standards will produce visually identical surfaces solely because both materials are labelled 2D.

Do not specify “2D” as the complete material specification.

The finish name does not define chemistry, mechanical properties, thickness tolerance, flatness or inspection documentation.

If exact dullness, roughness or surface appearance matters, add measurable acceptance criteria or an approved sample.

Where the project compares 2D with 2B, confirm the required processing route and final surface rather than relying only on visual assumptions.

Technical FAQ

2D stainless steel finish FAQ

What does 2D mean on stainless steel?
2D identifies a cold-rolled stainless flat-product finish produced after heat treatment and pickling or descaling. It is generally duller and less reflective than 2B.
What is the difference between 2D and 2B stainless steel?
2B receives a final light cold-roll or skin-pass step that creates a smoother and more reflective appearance. 2D remains duller and is often selected where appearance is less important or later processing is planned.
What is the typical 2D surface roughness?
The 2D designation alone should not be treated as one universal Ra or Rz acceptance limit. If roughness is critical, state the required measurable range separately.
Is 2D stainless steel reflective?
2D is generally a dull, low-reflectivity mill finish. The exact visual result can vary with material grade, mill route, pickling condition, thickness and lighting.
Can 2D stainless steel be formed or fabricated?
Yes. The processing route should be selected according to material grade, thickness and part geometry. State whether the 2D surface must remain visible or will receive further finishing.
Can 2D stainless sheet use protective film?
Protective film can be specified where available and necessary, especially when the supplied 2D face must be preserved through fabrication, transport or handling. Confirm the film in the quotation.
How should 2D surface defects be accepted?
Use written criteria for scratches, stains, handling marks and localized variation. For appearance-sensitive projects, agree the viewing condition and an approved limit sample.
What should be included in a 2D stainless steel RFQ?
Include grade, product form, dimensions, quantity, 2D finish designation, applicable standard, tolerances, Ra/Rz or sample requirement where needed, protective film, processing, destination, due date and documentation requirements.
