Stainless Steel Surface Finish
2B Stainless Steel Finish
Specifications, Supply & Technical Guide2B stainless steel finish is a smooth, moderately reflective cold-rolled mill finish widely specified for stainless sheet, coil and strip. This guide combines the finish definition with measurable 2B surface roughness controls, supply requirements, processing guidance, finish comparison and technical RFQ information.

Finish Definition
What is a 2B stainless steel finish?
A 2B stainless steel finish is produced on cold-rolled flat stainless steel after heat treatment and pickling or descaling, followed by a final light cold-roll or skin pass using polished rolls.
The final skin pass improves surface smoothness and flatness and gives 2B its familiar moderately reflective appearance. It is widely used as a final mill finish and as a starting surface for later polishing or fabrication.
The designation 2B alone does not guarantee an identical gloss, color tone, Ra value or Rz value from every mill or batch. When appearance or 2B surface roughness is critical, define measurable limits and an approved visual sample.
Specify these controls when finish consistency matters
- Material grade and applicable product standard
- Thickness, width, length and dimensional tolerances
- 2B finish designation and visible side requirement
- Ra / Rz range and measurement method when required
- Reflectivity / color tolerance or approved limit sample
- Protective film, paper interleave and packaging
- Defect acceptance criteria for scratches, pits, stains and marks
- Cleaning and post-fabrication surface requirements
Use agreed instrument settings and record the measured sample result when roughness is an acceptance criterion.
Where visual consistency matters, use controlled lighting and an approved panel or upper/lower finish limit sample.
Agree the visible face, viewing condition and permitted handling marks, scratches, pits or stains before production.
Use non-abrasive cleaning methods and avoid tools or residues that can scratch or contaminate the stainless surface.
Supply Specification
2B finish stainless sheet, coil and strip ordering matrix
Use this matrix to define the commercial form, measurable finish requirement and surface protection needed for quotation. Exact availability must be confirmed by grade, dimensions and quantity.
Specify grade, thickness, width, length, tolerance, visible face, finish acceptance and protective film.
Add coil ID/OD, preferred coil weight, surface protection and packaging requirements where relevant.
Add slit width, edge condition, width tolerance, coil weight and post-slitting surface protection.
| Supply Form | Required Order Data | 2B Surface Control | Protection / Acceptance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sheet | Grade, thickness, width, length, quantity and dimensional tolerance | 2B designation; Ra / Rz or approved sample when specified | Film/paper, visible side and defect acceptance to be agreed |
| Coil | Grade, thickness, width, quantity, coil ID and preferred coil weight | Mill 2B finish with agreed roughness/visual criteria where required | Coil handling, surface protection and packaging to be defined |
| Strip | Grade, thickness, slit width, quantity, width tolerance and edge condition | Confirm surface condition after slitting and visible-face requirement | Protective film and permitted edge/handling marks to be agreed |
| Cut Blank | Grade, thickness, blank dimensions, quantity and drawing if applicable | Protect 2B surface through cutting and downstream handling | Flatness, burr, scratch and film requirements to be stated |
Finish Selection
2B vs 2D vs BA / 2R vs No. 4 stainless steel finish
Choose the finish according to visual requirement, surface roughness control, fabrication route and final service condition rather than finish name alone.
| Finish | Appearance | Manufacturing Character | Typical Selection Logic | Surface-Control Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2D | Duller and less reflective | Cold rolled, heat treated and pickled/descaled | Appearance is secondary or later processing will modify the surface | Generally less smooth than 2B |
| 2B This Page |
Smooth, moderately reflective | Cold-rolled route plus final light skin pass | General fabrication, formed parts and base material for later finishing | Use Ra/Rz or sample criteria when finish consistency is critical |
| BA / 2R | Brighter and more reflective than 2B | Bright annealed in a controlled atmosphere | Projects requiring a brighter mill appearance | Do not assume BA and 2B are visually interchangeable |
| No. 4 | Directional brushed / polished texture | Mechanical abrasive finishing | Visible decorative surfaces requiring a directional finish | Use sample, grit/process definition and appearance limits |
Processing & Surface Protection
Processing routes for 2B stainless steel
Processing requirements should be stated at RFQ stage so the 2B surface can be protected through slitting, cutting, forming, handling and delivery.
Slitting
Specify slit width, width tolerance, edge condition and surface protection after slitting.
Cut to Length
Define sheet length, flatness, burr control, visible face and film requirement.
Protective Film
Use film or paper interleave when downstream fabrication or visible finish quality requires protection.
Laser / Profile Cutting
Provide drawings, dimensional tolerances and requirements for preserving the visible 2B face.
Bending & Fabrication
Identify bend geometry and the finished visible side to reduce avoidable surface marking.
Further Finishing
2B can be used as a starting condition for later polishing, brushing or other specified finishing.
Cleaning guidance
Use soft cloths and non-abrasive cleaning methods. Rinse residues and dry the surface to reduce staining.
Avoid contamination
Avoid carbon-steel brushes, dirty tools and handling surfaces that may introduce iron contamination.
Protect visible faces
Keep film in place through compatible fabrication steps and remove it according to the agreed production route.
Defect acceptance
Define scratches, pits, stains, roll marks and handling marks against an agreed viewing condition or limit sample.
Application Guidance
Where is 2B stainless steel finish used?
2B is often selected where a smooth mill surface, practical fabrication and moderate reflectivity are more important than a decorative directional polish.
General Fabrication
Panels, brackets, covers, formed parts and fabricated stainless assemblies.
Equipment Enclosures
Industrial housings and equipment panels where a smooth mill-finished surface is acceptable.
Food & Process Equipment
Fabricated equipment where the selected grade, design and surface condition satisfy the project requirements.
Kitchen & Appliance Parts
Internal and fabricated components requiring a practical cold-rolled stainless surface.
Tanks & Process Components
Sheet and coil used in formed, welded or fabricated process components.
Base for Further Finishing
A common starting condition for later polishing, brushing or application-specific surface treatment.
Standards & Equivalence
How 2B finish is specified in ASTM and EN standards
The finish designation should be combined with the correct material grade, product standard, dimensions, tolerances, measurable surface requirements and inspection documentation.
- ASTM A480 / A480M — No. 2B A smooth, moderately reflective cold-rolled annealed and pickled/descaled finish followed by a final light cold-roll pass.
- EN 10088-2 — 2B Cold rolled, heat treated, pickled and skin passed; smoother than the 2D condition.
- 2B surface roughness Ra and Rz should be treated as separate measurable acceptance requirements when the application needs tighter control.
- Reflectivity / color tolerance Use an approved sample or finish-limit sample where visual consistency is part of acceptance.
Do not specify “2B” as the complete material specification.
A finish designation does not define chemistry, mechanical properties, thickness tolerance, flatness, exact Ra/Rz, exact color or inspection documentation.
For critical appearance, pair the written specification with an approved physical sample, controlled lighting and agreed viewing or measurement criteria.
Do not assume two standards, mills or production batches will produce visually identical surfaces solely because each product is labelled “2B”.
